The familiar figure of ISCME Council member Professor D. B. Spalding made a valuable contribution to the mechanical engmeermg section with the paper he co-authored entitled PHOENICS. A general purpose program for fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical reaction processes. Dr A. Pramila of the University of Oulu, Finland, also an ISCME member, discussed computer aided design. The extubltaon attracted a large number of visitors who were able to see demonstrated at first hand a wide variety of software systems and packages offered by various companies and orgamsations CHAM, a UK company speciahslng in the multidimensional, multiphase, mathematical modelling of engineering and environmental processes involving fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical reaction, was represented at ttus conference. The company has developed a general purpose computer program PHOENICS for analysing such processes together with the graphical display system GRAFFIC. Gang-nag software is a leading specialist company in the area of timber manufacturing technology and were represented at the exhibition. Recently the company has expanded into international consultancy, computer hardware sales and software developments In related areas. Computational Mechanics concentrated on demonstratIng its BEASY pre- and post-processing systems which provide the user with simple to use systems of the interactive creation and display of BEASY data and results. The system is mainly for stress analysis but it also has wide applications in the mechanical, aeronautical automotive offshore and civil engineering industries. It can be used for example for heat transfer analysis. Davy Computing offered a software buying centre. Developers often lack marketing expertise and the ability to support their software m commercial markets. Davy Computing offer this expertise and support to enable thetr software to reach a wider market
The CEGB showed three programs from their large library of software. These are BERSAFE Level 3, the latest release o f the CEGB's much respected extensive finite element suite for structural analysis. Vision. an lnteractwe graphics system providing facilities for the display of multidimensional data. PMSP the CEGB plant modelling system programs.
ISCME Sponsored events CALL FOR PAPERS
5th Internattonal Conference on Fmtte Elements m Water Resources 18-22 June 1984 Vermont, USA Four of our ISCME members, including President Professor G. Plnder, form the organising committee of the 5th International Conference on Finite Elements. Once again the conference programme promises to provide a hvely and exciting forum for the interchange and exhcnage of ideas and new developments for delegates in many branches of water resource dlsclphnes aU over the world. Since finite element methods have been shown to be a powerful tool for the analysis of water resource problems the accuracy, economy and improvements in and hmitation o f the method wall be considered. Other related methods of dlscretisation are also within the scope of the conference, as are new developments in numerical and computational techmques, basic mathematical formulations and software and hardware aspects. Papers are invited on the following topics and abstracts should be submitted by 1 September 1983: Groundwater and seepage; tidal processes, ocean dynamics; river flow problems, wave modelling, fluid forces on structures; viscous flow, turbulence modelling; transport phenomena; heat waste problems, seawater intrusion, water quality, acid ram transport, enxqronmental protection, meteorological protection, sedimentation processes, parameter identification, cahbratxon techniques, flow control, finite element techniques, boundary element techniques, numerical mathematics, software systems, pre- and post-data-processing, hard and software developments. All papers will be pubhshed in hardback book form which will provide an exceptional overview of the state of the art in Finite Element Modelhng Further details from J. P. Laible, Finite Element Conference, Department of Clvfl Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Unwersity of Vermont, Burhngton, Vermont 04545, USA
2nd Internanonal Conference on Computational Methods and Expenmental Measurements June 1984 On board the liner Queen Elizabeth H
Dr J Nelson (rear) wtth Adrtan Beard of Gang-had
Arrangements are now underway for this the most exciting event yet sponsored by ISCME. The conference fee wall include sail-fly travel and accommodation. Special prices on the QEH have been negotiated for the Conference and will include the cost of return sail-fly travel on the QE H and return from any airport in the USA served by British Airways Likewise UK travellers will fly from the UK
