ANNOUNCEMENTS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON FINITE ELEMENTS IN NON-LINEAR MECHANICS

FENOMECH 78 Institut für Statik und Dynamik der Luft. und Raumfahrtkonstruktionen Universitiit Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Fed. Rep. Germany August 30

September 1, 1978

The Institute of Statics and Dynamics at the University of Stuttgart announces an International Conference on Finite Elements in Non-Linear Mechanics. The meeting is sponsored by the professional societies “Gesellschaft für Angewaridte Mathematik und Mechanik” (GAMM), “Groupe pour l’Avancement des Méthodes Numêriques de l’lngénieur” (GAMNI) and “Associazione Italiana di Meccanica Teorica ed Applicata” (AIMETA), and intends to bring together noted authorities in the field of computational mechanics. On this occasion, recent developments will be presented in 24 invited lectures, twelve from the European scene and twelve from the United States. The conference is also intended as an anniversary meeting on the occasions of the 65th birthday of Prof. J.H. Argyris and of the 75th birthday of Prof. W. Prager. The presentations will cover computational methods and in particular theory and application of the finite element method when applied in structural mechanics as well as solid and fluid mechanics. The invited lectures will be arranged in five sessions which deal with individual aspects of finite elements in applied mechanics. I. Structural Mechanics, II. Solid Mechanics, III. Fluid Mechanics, IV. Numerical Analysis, V. Approximation Theory. All presentations will be published in an anniversary volume which will contain the complete text of the invited lectures.

SYMPOSIUM ON COMPUTER FILMS A symposium on Computer films will be held at JILA Colorado, from March 22 to March 24, 1978. The primary interest will be the use of computer film as a research tool. The program will concentrate on hydrodynamics, plasma physics, solitons, many-body problems, atomic collisions, and the dynamics of non-equilibrium radiation-gas interaction, such as lasers. Further details can be obtained from: Dr. J.H. Eberly Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics University of Colorado Boulder Colorado 80309 USA

CONFERENCE ON COMPUTATIONAL ATOMIC AND

MOLECULAR PHYSICS A conference on Computational Atomic and Molecular Physics will be held in Nottingham from September 12 to September 15, 1978. The emphasis of the programme will be on computational and numerical methods appropriate for studies of stationary states and scattering of atoms and molecules. This conference combines the annual Quantum Theory Conference

held at Nottingham and elsewhere with a meeting of the Computational Physics Group of the European Physical Society. The fee, including full board and lodging in student residences on the university campus, is expected to be about £40. Further details can be obtained from: Dr. R.L. Hudson Mathematics Department University ofNottingham University Park Nottingham NG7 21W England. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON NUMERICAL METHODS IN LAMINAR AND TURBULENT FLOW

OBJECTIVES The main objective of the conference is to consolidate the recent advances in the application of numerical techniques, particularly fmite difference and finite element methods, to the solution oflaminar and turbulent flow problems. A further aim is to solicit contributions which compare other numerical techniques and the fmite element method. It is intended that this may be achieved by providing a forum for experimentalists and numerical analysts to present and discuss papers on specified topics relating to laminar and turbulent flow. The conference will be held in Swansea from July 18 to July 21, 1978 and is being organised in association with the Institute of Numerical Methods in Engineering, Swansea.

CALL FOR PAPERS Intending speakers should submit abstracts of approximately 300 words in length by 1st January 1978. Final papers must be submitted by 1st April, 1978. All papers will be published in the Conference Proceedings.

DETAILS Persons wishing further details or submitting abstracts should write to Dr. C. Taylor Department of Civil Engineering University College Swansea SA2 8PP UK.
