On board were Commander V. Lyakhov, Physician V. Polyakov and a first Afghan cosmonaut, Abdel Abad Mohamad. The flight programme provided for the craft’s linkup with the orbital complex MIR, and joint scientific studies with the cosmonauts on board. Soyuz TM-6 docked with Kvant (rear port) on 31 August 1988. The Commander and the Afghan cosmonaut returned to Earth in Soyuz TM-5 undocking on 5 September 1988. Soyuz TM-6 (with the Commander and flight engineer of TM-5 and the cosmonaut researcher of Soyuz TM-6) undecked from Kvant and docked with MIR (front port) on 8 September 1988.
