composites. Although the variety of inhomogeneous systems is large, there exists an underlying unity to the subject which has not always been recognized. A principal aim of this conference is to bring together persons working on different inhomogeneous systems, so that this unity might become clearer. 22—24 March 1978 International Topical Conference on the Physics of Si02 and its Interfaces, Yorktown Heights, New York, U.S.A. An International Topical Conference on the Physics of Si02 and Its Interfaces will be held at the IBM Ti. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York, on 22—24 March 1978, immediately preceding the March meeting of the American Physical Society in Washington, D.C. This is a topical conference cosponsored by the American Physical Society, IBM, the Office of Naval Research, and the Advanced Research Projects Agency. The subject matter ofthe conference will be limited to the physics of SiO2 and related oxides and their interfaces with other materials. Emphasis will be on fundamental questions on the atomic structure and stoichiometry, electronic structure, bonding, spectroscopy, vibrational and thermal properties, transport properties, defects and impurities. Subjects primarily concerned with the manufacture and performance of devices will not be addressed. The objective of the conference is to bring together physicists, chemists, engineers and other scientists who have been studying Si02 and its interfaces with diverse motivations and varying points of view. It is intended that this conference will provide a needed forum for the presentation of basic work on the interfaces of Si02, which would complement other conferences that cover mainly technological aspects. The program will include both invited and contributed papers to be selected by the organizing committee. There will be no parallel sessions. Advance abstracts will appear in the Bulletin of the American Physical Society and the proceedings will be published. Abstracts of contributed papers should be received by 28 November 1977 and should conform to the rules set by the Bulletin of the American Physical Society. Authors may submit covering letters to assist the Cornmittee in the selection of papers for presentation. Information: Dr. Sokrates T. Pantelides, Conference Chairman, IBM Thomas J. sixth International Symposium on Boron and Borides, Dmzhba, Bulgaria. The Sixth International Symposium on Boron and Borides will be held from October 9—12, 1978 at Druzhba (near Varna, Black Sea Coast), Bulgaria. It is the continuation of the meetings pràviously held at: Asbury Park (1959), Paris (1964), Warsaw (1968), Tbilisi (1972) and Bordeaux (1975). The Symposium will deal with the following topics: Crystal chemistry of boron and borides; Preparation, crystal growth, analysis and lattice vibrations; Electronic properties of boron and borides; Chemical bonding and electronic structure; Mechanical properties and applications. The Symposium is organized by the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The chairman of the Symposium is Professor G. Bliznakov, Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Sofia. General information about the Symposium can be obtained by writing to: Dr. P~Peshev, Scientific Secretary, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry, 113-Sofia, Bulgaria. 1977 Gordon Research Conferences The Gordon Research Conferences for the summer of 1977 will be held in New Hampshire and California.
