(a) Royal Aircraft Establishment Table of Earth Satellites 1957-86 Compiled at the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Famborough, England, the long-awaited third edition of this famous reference work is now available from Macmillan. A complete chronological list of the 2869 launches of satellites and space vehicles between 1957 and the end of 1986, including satellites about which no other data is available. The Table provides: The name and international designation of each satellite and its associated rocket(s) Date of launch Lifetime (actual or estimated) Mass, shape, dimensions One or more sets of orbital parameters Introduction and Index. An 18-page introduction explains the main table and defines the terms used. The full 42-page index allows the user to locate any satellite quickly by its name, even if its launch date is not known. It is also easy to find satellites of a particular type (e.g. Apollo, Luna, Cosmos). Revisions. The extensive revisions to the third edition include not only all the new launches in the last three years, but also over 1000 revisions to the existing data. Thus, new details are given of satellites which have changed orbit, fallen to Earth and been destroyed or recovered. Since 1957, the RAE has specialized in the analysis of satellite orbits to determine upper-atmosphere density and winds, and the Earth’s gravitational field. The authors are D. G. King-Hele, D. M. C. Walker, J. A. Pilkington, A. N. Winterbottom, H. Hiller, and G. E. Perry. This publication is obtainable from: Globe Books Services Ltd, Brunel Road, Houndsmills, Basingstoke, Hants RG21 2XS, UK. 92
