36 850. Diffusion process during the degassing of rubberlike materials. (Germany) The degassing rate of rubber-elastic materials was investigated and found to be in accordance with the values calculated using the second Fick Diffusion equation. At the beginning, the gas evolution takes place from the surface. After a time, however, diffusion of gas through the material is mainly responsible for the W. J. S. degassing into vacuum. (Germany) During the last ten years, vacuum steel degassing has been actively developed and has now reached the practical stage of full scale employment. This has been largely due to the perfectioning of efficient steam ejector pumps with a capacity of over 1 million cubic metres per hour at a pressure of 0.5 torr (steam consumption This enables anoroximatelv 10 tons/h at 10 atmospheres). .. charges of the order of 100 tons of steel to bc trcatcd in one operation. Main difficulties encountered are temperature losses of charge on introduction and control of slag. Modern methods of overcoming these troubles arc discussed and the possibility of both heating and storing the charge by electromagnetic induction is mentioned. Recent developments cover the possibility of carrying out metallurgical work on the charge under rcduccd pressure in addition to degassing and suitable devices arc described. It appears probable that such procedure will considerably improve the quality of the final product and reduce ultimate cost. W. I. S. (Germany) W. Coupette,

45 852. Soldering and Brazing. (Great Brifuin) A broad outline is presented of the physical principles that underline both soldering and brazing. The properties of the currently used materials are described, and examples are given of their practical application in the electronic industry. (U.S.A.) (Author) W. H. 47 853. Properties and possible applications of titanium tilms as getter pumps. (Germuny) A titanium sublimation pump with three heating wires of tungsten is described each carrying 35-45A. The titanium to be evaporated is wound as a thin wire around the tungsten wire. A deposit of .2 g per wire can remove 8 torr litre N, at pressures ranging from 10 -s-lO-*’ torr. Pumping speed 9000 l.isec. Working in contact with a fore pump, a pressure of IO -%torr can be reached in 30 min for the usual size of recipient. (Sk*irzer/unc/) w. J. s. M.
