Sweden's Uppsala University and IBM at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) in Berkeley, California. Dr. Anders Nilsson of Uppsala University indicates that, "the set of spectroscopies provide complementary information, e.g. surface vs. bulk sensitivity or occupied vs. unoccupied electronic states." A 3-page overview of 'Thin-film Coatings Make Auto Parts Supertough' and another 3-page article surveys the status of electric cars ('Electric Cars Begin Their Charge to Market'. This is followed by a 2-page article entitled 'Paving the Way for Alternative-fuel Cars'. Following the auto article, the results of R&D's survey of scanning probe microscope (SPM) users are presented. A table lists the various SPMs together with features that are or are not available for the particular model. In general, the information in this magazine is of interest to those engaged in research in materials, and this certainly includes those working with catalysts. A subscription to the magazine is free for those who qualify. its 17th Conference. The meeting will be held during March 29-April 2, 1998 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in New Orleans. Details and call for papers/posters will be posted on the ORCS World Wide Web - http://www.rocktech.com/orcs. More information can be obtained from the chairman of the meeting, Dr. Frank E. Hartos, at the address given in the Calendar.
8th Brazilian Seminar on Catalysis, Nova Friburgo, Brazil, 13-15 September 1995 The latest of these meetings, which take place every two years and are organized by the Catalysis Committee of the Brazilian Institute of Petroleum, is part of a series that started sixteen years ago when the activities in catalysis in Brazil were at an initiation stage. Since then, the Seminar itself reflects the continuous growth of such an activity and nowadays it attracts not only the Brazilian community but also people from many other countries, especially those from Iberoamerica. More than 200 persons registered for the seminar and 129 contributions, following a rigorous reviewing process, were presented in three parallel oral sessions and one poster session. Many of these papers resulted from partnerships between Brazilian and foreign groups while others had no Brazilian participation (Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, Portugal, Russia, Germany, United States and Mexico). These papers were grouped into catalysis by metals, oxides, zeolites and sulfides; homogeneous catalysis; and modelling/kinetics. Five renowned scientists gave plenary lectures that drew the attention of the audience: Dr. Zelimir Gabelica/Namur/Belgium Volume 142 No. 2 - - 15 August 1996

('New Trends in the Synthesis of Metallosilicate Zeolite Catalysts'), Dr. Roel Prins/Zurich/Switzerland ('The Effect of Phosphorus on the Hidrodenitrogenation Reaction over Ni-MoS2/AI203 Catalysts'), Dr. Ruth Martins/Rio de Janeiro/Brazil ('Influence of Post-synthesis Treatments on the Properties of Y Zeolites'), Prof. Jose Luis Garcia-Fierro/Madrid/Spain ('Selective Hydrogenation of Carbon Dioxide'), Prof. Joel Barrault/Poitiers/France ('Oxidation of Cl-C3 Paraffins over Promoted Mo-
lybdenum Catalysts') and Prof. Gabor Somorjai/Berkeley/USA ('The Model System Approach to Heterogeneous Catalysis'). Last but not least, the warm hospitality and the mild climate at the resort chosen as site of the Seminar made the social events very pleasant and contributed to a fruitful exchange of ideas and expertise. The 9th Brazilian Congress on Catalysis will be held in Sao Paulo next year. Jose Luiz Monteiro
