Magnesium has thc lowest specific gravity in practical structual metals. Application of magnesium for wheel leads to improved handling and drivability of a vehicle because of the reduction of an unsprung weight. An ultralight weight magnesium wheel was achieved by developing a new magnesium alloy mainly composed of magnesium, aluminum, zinc and special additive CaNCN or Sr. Both additive improves forgeability of continuous casting billet. The mechanical properties of new alloy's billet after forging and T6 heat treatment is superior to existing magnesium alloy such as AZS0.
9437223 Production Engineering Development of Thin Wall Steel Casting Mituyoshi Sato, Minoru Uozumi. Fukuo Todoroki, Masao Nakayama (Toyota Motor Corporation). pp. 1~5-168, 17 figs.. 3 tables, 2 refs. The cast steel has better properties than the cast iron. But it is very difficult to casting, so we can see little application lbr autmoible parts. To solve this problem, we developed the new original vacuum casting process. By this technology, it is possible to produce the light weight and heat resisting exhaust manifold (It's wall thickness is less than 3 mm) which has never seen. 9437232 Development of High Performance Organic CompositeCoated Steel Sheets for Automotive panel Yasushi Hosoda, Toshiaki Shiota, Nobukazu Suzuki, Hiroyuki Nagai, Satoshi Ikcda, Kazuyoshi Tamura (SM1), Yukio Suzukawa, Mikio Nakatsukasa, Fumihisa Kishimoto, Hidekazu Kato, Shuji Osako ( Mazda Motor Corp. }. pp. 169-170. 6 figs., 2 refs. High performance organic composite-coated steel sheet was developed. As this steel sheet shows better E-c~Jat paintability, image clarity, and cosmetic corrosion resistance, it is available to automotivc outer panels. Furthermore, high pertbrmance organic composite

9437278 Effects of Diesel Fuel Properties on Particulate Emissions from D.I. Diesel Engines Yoshio Fujimoto, Yukihiro Tsukasaki, Yasunori Takei (Toyota Motor Corporation), Tadao Ogawa (Toyota CRDL, Inc.), Masahiko Nakada (Toyota Motor Corporation), pp. 5-8, 10 figs., 3 tables, 6 refs. Effects of fuel properties on particulate emissions were investigated by Japanese 13 mode. Ten fuels were prepared to investigate mainly the effects of T90, aromatics content, and cetane number under 0.05% sulfur concentration. Decreasing fraction of higher boiling point components in the fuels linearly reduces particulate emissions. Regression analysis in several engine conditions from the test mode was conducted to find the other fuel properties which influence particulate emissions. The highest correlation was given when T10 and viscosity were variables in these test ccmditions. This indicates that fuel properties which determine fuel atomization or mixture formation is also important factor for formation of particulate emissions. 9437287 Analysis of Diesel Particulate Matter Manami Ara, Kishi Yoshiaka (Mitsubishi Motors Corporation), pp. 9-12, 12 figs., 1 table, 2 refs. It is worthwhile for engine modification, to analyze SOF in PM in detail. But recently PM has been reduced as engine have been modified further. Consequently it has been difficult to analyze SOF using conventional methods, as they are time-consuming and use a lot of organic solution. This report has examined Direct Injection Gas Chromatography as a possible solution. As a result, it is possible to analyze smaller samples, reduce analyzing time by half and reduce the use of organic solution, 9437296 Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides by Alumina Catalyst in Methanol Diesel Engine Exhaust Toshiyuki Seko, Kenji Tsuchia (Japan Automobile Research Institute, lnc.), pp. 13-16, 8 figs., 3 refs. This study aims to verify the capability of alumina catalyst for the reduction of NOx in the actual methanol diesel engine exhaust. It was fimnd through this study that about more than 500°C catalyst temperature and about less than 2000(I 1 / h r space velocity are required to achieve a high catalyst conversion efficiency. It is effective for raising the conversion efficiency to add methanol into exhaust gas before the catalyst and the use of de-NOx catalyst is superior than ignition timing retard method h~r reducing NOx emission. 9437304 Analysis of Diesel Smoke Emission at Low Engine Speed roshiyuki Yoda, Yasuhiro Furuhashi, Shigeki Tojo, Nobuyuki Fujitani (NIPPONDENSO Co., Ltd.), pp. 17-20, 11 figs., 2 tables, 4 refs. Two types of injection nozzles with different tip configuration were tested and showed different smoke emission at low engine speed. Therefore, we studied the cause of this improvement. h is found that the smoke emission is reduced by the improvements of spray shape and droplet size owing to increasing the fuel velocity out of the nozzle oriffice by modificating the nozzle tip configuration.
9437313 The Effect of Advanced Electronic Controlled Rotary Fie on the Passenger Car Hsdi Diesel Combustion System Steve Whelan, Neville S. Jackson iRicardo), Kaoru Sato (Isuzu Advanced Engineering Center), N.E. Bell (Lucas), pp. 21-24, 4 figs., 2 tables, 3 refs. This paper summarises the programme carried out by Ricardo, Lucas and lsuzu to study the application of the latest advanced electronic controlled rotary fuel injection equipment (FIE) to a passenger car HSDI diesel combustion system. The work was carried out on a 4 valve single cylinder HSDI Hydra research engine. The new FIE system, designated ESR10, was evaluated in comparison with current advanced rotary FIE. Additionally, the application of two-stage lift injectors was investigated with injection rate variables. The results were related to the passenger car application, demonstrating the future performance and emissions potential of the HSDI combustion system.
