96103909 On-line identification and control of an AC/DC power system To, K. W. and David, A. K. Electrical Power & Energy Sysrems, May 1996, 18, (4), 223-227. The paper discusses the control of a parallel AC/DC power system using low-order models derived directly from lest data. Experimental data are obtained by applying a pseudo random binary sequences signal to the excitation system and one DC converter terminal of a laboratory system and resursive least-squares based system identification, premised on the exciter and DC current order as reference inputs, is implemented. The models so obtained have been successfully used for AC/DC power system controller design.
Silicon carbide - The power semiconductor mate96103919 rial of the future Bergman, K. ABB Review, 1996, (l), 37-42. Within the next decade silicon carbide (Sic) can be expected to join and possibly even supplant silicon as the material of choice for power semiconductor devices, especially for voltages from 500 V upwards. Losses are significantly lower with Sic-based power devices, while their operating temperatures can be higher than those of devices based on silicon. Reports that in November 1993, under a turnkey contract, Siemens began construction of two combined cycle power stations in Malaysia. The plants began full combined cycle operation just 22 months later. A group of international journalists were given a tour of the Paka plant to get a first hand taste of what is possible in the Malaysian private power sector. 96103911 Performance analysis of PV pumping systems using switched reluctance motor drives Metwally, H. PLC developments promise more utility services Power Systems, Feb. 1996, 16, (2), 33, 35-36. The article reports that while power line carrier (PLC) technology has a long history, only with new developments in the management of these sysems has It become possible to use PLC for high speed two-way communication. Since an existing infrastructure is used 10 carry information, this can be a highly cost effective way of remotely reading meters, automating distribution networks and much more. 96103914

Power barges ease Philippines power shortage Power Systems, Feb. 1996, 16, (2), 57, 59, 61. Reports that the Navotas barge project has been a cornerstone m helping the Philippines through the power crisis that almost brought the economy to a standstill. Van der Horst’s stake in the project recently reached more than 240 MW with rhe delivery of the latest of its four power barges. MPS, Modern

MPS, Modern Power Systems, Apr. 1996, 16, (4), 71, 73, 75. Reports that after nearly 30 years of continuous arduous operation for flood control and electric power production, the seven 47 MW hydropower units and water ways of the Aswan 1 dam are now undergoing extensive rehabilitation and upgrading. Because of the essential requirement for increased water supply during the summer months, the owner insists on no more than two of the seven units being out of operation at any time during the rehabilitation. 96103916 Pavey, N.

SPICE applications In education: Insulator strings of overhead transmission lines Qamber, I. S. Electric Power Systems Rex, Dec. 1995, 35, (3). 187-192. SPICE is a general-purpose simulation program for the analysis of DC or AC electrical circuits. In the paper, the uesfulness of the SPICE circuit analysis program is demonstrated as an educational tool in overhead transmission line insulator analysis. Two circuits are presented. One is a string of suspension insulators and the other is the grading ring. Both circuits are analyzed for the variation of the voltage distribution on the insulators against time. 96103924

Transient analysis of three-phase transmission 96103925 lines with initial voltage and current distributions Li, J. C. Elecrrlc Power Systems Res., Dec. 1995, 35, (3), 177-186. An efficient numerical inverse Laplace transformation algorithm is proposed for the transient analysis of a three-phase transmission line with arbitrary initial voltage and current distribution (known as the initial conditions) on the line. The Laplace transformation is applied to the transmission line equations and the equivalent rwo-port admittance matrix with current generators connected to the transmission line terminals which account for the initial condirions.
Economics, Policy, Supplies, Forecasts 96103926 Approxlmate computation of the variance of electrlc power generatlon system production costs Kapoor, A. and Mazumdar, M. Elecfrical Power & Energy Systems, May 1996, 18, (4), 229-238. The cost of production electric power by a utility depends on the magnitude of demand, the loading sequence of the generators used ro meet the demand, their variable costs and their availabilities. A Markovian model of the generation system together with a deterministic time-varying demand has been proposed to compute the mean and the variance of the production costs. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how the bivariate GramCharlier series approximation can be used to speed up the computation of the standard deviation. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate that this approximation is an effective computational tool for large systems. Blomass for electric power In the 21st century McGowin, C. R. Biomass & Bioenergy, 1996, 10, (2), 69-70. Discusses biomass energy which is approaching a crossroads. Whether biomass realizes its full potential to provide a sustainable and environmentally benign energy source depends on both technology advances and future government policy. Improved energy crop production and power technology, and changes in energy, agricultural and environmental policy will be necessary to make biomass energy a reality.
