NOTICES OF BOOKS. A GERMAN
TREATISE
ON TUBERCULOSIS.
DR. BANDELIER and P r o f e s s o r R o e p k e have just issued a new and g r e a t l y enlarged edition of their well-known h a n d b o o k on Tuberculosis. 1 I t is divioMd into four parts. T h e first part deals with the history of o u r knowledge on the subject, and the various accepted or uncertain etiological explanations of the d e v e l o p m e n t of tuberculous lesions. P a r t I I . is devoted to p u l m o n a r y tuberculosis, its diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and prophylaxis. I n P a r t I I I . tuberculous pleurisy a n d t u b e r c u l o u s p n e u m o t h o r a x are considered; and in P a r t IV. tuberculosis of the nose, larynx, pharynx, trachea, and large bronchi is discussed. T h e volume ends with a b i b l i o g r a p h y and index. P a r t i c u l a r l y interesting in P a r t I. is the carefully considered discussion on statistics and d a t a concerning p r i m a r y tuberculous infections, the paths of infection, and the relative r61es of the h u m a n and bovine types of the t u b e r c l e bacillus in the various clinical forms of tuberculosis in children a n d adults. A c c o r d i n g to these, the bovine type plays a more i m p o r t a n t p a r t in children in G r e a t B r i t a i n than in G e r m a n y and other countries. T h e theories of i m m u n i t y and reinfection are explained, according to Behring, R6mer, H a m b u r g e r , and Ranke, with the positions taken up b y pathologists such as Aschoff, H a r t , a n d Orth. Of course yon P i r q u e t ' s idea of " A l l e r g y " is given in regard to the cuti-reaction and similar tests. In P a r t I I . the various diseases which m a y be associated with, and sometimes influence the course of, p u l m o n a r y tuberculosis are s e p a r a t e l y considered, chiefly from the t h e r a p e u t i c point of view. On p. 595 we notice one mercurial preparation m a d e np with paraffin for i n t r a m u s c u l a r injection in syphilitic cases. S u r e l y mineral oils should be avoided for i n t r a m u s c u l a r and s u b c u t a n e o u s injections if possible, since t h e y sometimes give rise to chronic i n f l a m m a t o r y " f o r e i g n - b o d y t u m o u r s . " A careful and conscientiously written h a n d b o o k like the p r e s e n t one is indeed a mine of information a n d a valuable guide for all physicians and students. F. PARKES WEBER, M , D .
