A NEW CORPORATE IMAGE FOR THE BRITISH MYCOLOGICAL SOCIETY At the first plenary meeting of the BMS for Special Interest Committees and Council Members, held at Manchester in February 1987, the Society was urged to modernise the Transactions. Subsequently, Council decided that a corporate image was needed, to include a new journal cover, the design of a logo, and a new style of stationery for the Officers and Editors. A Working Party report recommended a new format journal, renamed Mycological Research and subtitled An International Journal of Fungal Biology, upgraded to A4-size with quality art-paper and changes in type-face and layout. An approach was made to the Graphics Department of Bristol Polytechnic and several final-year students were commissioned to produce the new corporate design. The design approved by Council, and illustrated below, was produced by Revis White (photo left). Revis comes from Derby and completed her Foundation studies at the Derbyshire College of Higher Education before embarking on a 3-year BA(Hon) Graphic Design Course at Bristol Polytechnic. Her main interests lie in photography, watercolour/pen & ink illustration and computer generated graphics, and she has had work experience in London and Bristol. Revis explains, 'It is my interest in computers which prompted the idea for the image used throughout the design. The image was derived from a mushroom spore-print, which was then photographed and digitally scanned into a computer where I then manipulated it in various ways'.
