A New Species of the Genus Ctenobelba (Acari, Oribatida) from Korea Seong-Sik Choi* College of Life Science and Natural Resources, Wonkwang University, Iksan-shi 570-749, Korea
Abstract A new species belonging to the genus Ctenobelba Balogh, 1943, is described from Korea. The new species, Ct. leei sp. n., closely resembles Ct. longisetosa Suzuoka and Aoki, 1980 from Japan. However, the Japanese species Ct. longisetosa differs by 1) the large body size (770-797 .urn in length, 455468 .urn in width as opposed to the rather small size with 520-600 .urn long and 264-362 .urn wide, 2) a pair of notogastral condyles on the anterior margin of notogaster as opposed to two pairs of notogastral condyles, 3) three pectinations on sensillus as opposed to 6-9 pectinations, 4) the setal formula of epimerata 3-1-4-4 as opposed to the 3-1-3-3, and 5) the glabrous anal setae as opposed to barbed from the present new species. A key to the hitherto known species of the longisetosa-group belonging to the genus Ctenobelba Balogh, 1943 is given.
seta (not reaching the marginal line of notogaster), simple epimeral seta and distribute mainly in Europe while the latter group have long (extending beyond the marginal edge of notogaster) and setiform notogastral seta, ramifying epimeral seta, and distribute only in the Far Eastern Asia. The present new species belongs to the longisetosa-group. The oribatid materials were collected by Prof. Seung Yeob Lee at from Seokmo-island, Ganghwa-gun, Kyunggi-do, centralwestern Korea (Fig. 1).

Introduction In the course of taxonomical study of oribatid mites of Korea, a new species belonging to the genus Ctenobelba Balogh, 1943, is found and described herein. The genus Ctenobelba was established by Balogh (1943) with Eremobelba pectinigera Berlese, 1908 as the type species. The characteristic features of the genus are summarized by Mahunka (1965) ; (1) well developedlamellaeon prodorsum, (2) sensillus pectinate, (3) ten pairs of notogastral setae, and (4) ventral plate with neotrichy, The genus Ctenobelba as a single genus of the family Ctenobelbidae Grandjean, 1965 comprises 18 species of oribatid mites. All the hitherto known species are divided into 2 groups i.e., the pectinigera and the longisetosagroups by the length of notogastra1 seta and feature of epimeral and ventral setae. Taxonomic Accounts Family Ctenobelbidae Grandjean, 1965 Genus Ctenobelba Balogh, 1943 Ctenobelba leei sn, n. (Fig. 2A-C) Diagnosis. Tip of rostrum with a pair of tooth-like tubercles. Lamellar seta extending beyond the tip of rostrum and sparsely barbed at basal parts. Interlamellar seta glabrous, far beyond the level of insertion-

pore of lamellar seta. Along the lateral edge ofrostrum provided with 5-6 serrations. Sensillus with 6-9 pectinations; 4-5 long and anterior 2-3 short. Lamella relatively well developed. Dorsal suture faint and nearly straight. Anterior margin of notogaster provided with 2 pairs of condyles. Ten pairs of notogastral setae mostly similar in shape but slightly different in length ; whip-like setiform, long (all the setae extending beyond the marginal line of notogaster), glabrous and finely terminating. Hypostomal setae h ramifying. Setal formula of epimerata 3-1-3-3 ; the setae ramifying except the setae 1c with long, setiform, minutely
roughened, finely terminating and directed anterad. Sejugal furrow (at the lateral sides of posterior margin of epimerata II and anterior margin of epimerata III) with 2 pairs (anterior and posterior condyles opposite to each other) of triangular condyles. Two pairs of anal setae minutely roughened unilaterally. Three pairs of adanal setae long, smooth, and inserted along the posterior edge of ventral plate. Ventral plate provided with more or less 70 pairs setaceousneotrichy. All legs monodactyle. Measurements. Body length 560 ttrn (520-600, n= 19), width 292 f.llIl (264-362, n=16).

A new species of the genus Ctenobelba
Color. Yellowish brown. Prodorsum. Tip of rostrum with a pair of tooth-like small tubercles. Rostral setae (ro) rather long (ca. more or less 100 .urn in length), fine, minutely roughened and inserted on latero-dorsal surface of prodorsum. Lamellae rather long, thick, almost parallel or weakly converging anteriorly. Lamellar setae (Ie) long (ca. 140-150 fJ.ill in length) and straight; extending beyond the tip of rostrum and very minutely, sparsely barbed. Interlamellar setae (in) ca. 150-160 .urn long, glabrous and far beyond level of insertion pore of lamellar seta. Exbothridial setae (ex) (ca. 70-75 .urn in length) thin, smooth, rather long and finely terminating; extending beyond the lateral edge of prodorsum. Along the lateral edge of rostrum provided with 5-6 serrations. Sensillus (ss) ca. 140-150 fJ.ill long and comb-like with 6-9 pectinations ; 4-5 long and anterior 2-3 short. Longitudinal chitinous band-like ridge found outside of each lamella. Notogaster. Dorsosejugal suture faint, nearly straight and provided with 2 pairs of condyles on anterior margin of notogaster. Median condyles rather large and semicircular swelling, lateral ones rather small and triangular in shape. Ten pairs of notog astral setae mostly similar in shape and slightly variable in length ; all the setae extending beyond the marginal edge of notogaster; setae ta ca. 130-135 fJ.ill long, whip-like, glabrous and finely terminating. Setae p series rather thin, and somewhat bent. Lyrifissures ia, im and gland opening (gla) evident. Ventral side. Hypostomal setae h (ca. 70 .urn long) ramifying and setae m and a minutely roughened outwards. An inverted triangle chitinous speckle found on the median part of epimeres I. Formula of epimeral setae 3-1-3-3 ; the setae ramifying except the seta 1c with long (ca. 130-140 .urn in length), setiform, minutely roughened, finely terminating and directed anterad. Sejugal furrow at the lateral sides of posterior margin of epimerata II and anterior margin of epimerata III found 2 pairs (anterior and posterior condyles opposite to each other) of triangular condyles. Six pairs of genital setae simple and smooth. Two pairs of anal setae medium length with minutely roughened outwards. Three pairs of adana1 setae long, glabrous, rather thick, similar to notogastra1 setae in shape and inserted along the posterior edge of ventral plate. Ventral plate provided with more or less 70 pairs of setaceous neotrichy. Adana1 fissures iad aligned parallel to the lateral margin of anal aperture. All legs monodactyle. Material examined. Holotype: Seokmo-island, Ganghwa-gun, Kyunggi-do, central-western Korea. 16VII-2004. Seung Yeob Lee leg. Paratypes (more than 100 exs.) : the same data as holotype. All the type series are deposited in the Laboratory of Plant Protection, Wonkwang University. Remarks. The present new species resembles the

longisetosa-group species, Ctenobelba Iongisetosa Aoki, 1980 from Japan (Yamakuchi-ken), Ct. soloduchi Pan'kow, 1988 from Russia (Khabarovsk), and Ct. polysetosa Aoki et Yamamoto, 2000 from China (Yunnan), in the long notogastral setae and ramifying epimeral setae. However, the Japanese species Ct. longisetosa Suzuoka and Aoki, 1980 is easily distinguishable from Ct. leei sp. n. by 1) the large body size (770-797 .urn in length, 455-468 .urn in width), 2) a pair of semicircular swellings on the anterior margin of notogaster, 3) the sensillus bears only 3 pectinations, 4) the setal formula of epimerata 3-1-4-4, and 5) the anal setae simple. The Russian species Ct. soloduchi Pan'kow, 1988 can be differentiated from the new species by the 1) sensillus with 9 pectinations, 2) genital and anal setae distinctly barbed, 3) neotrichial setae of ventral plate with strong ramifying, The Chinese species Ct. polysetosa Aoki and Yamamoto, 2000 differs from the new species by the 1) sensillus with 11 pectinations, 2) lamellar and interlamellar setae smooth, 3) six pairs of genital setae with ramiform, 4) anal setae smooth, 5) a pair of aggenital setae short and simple, and 6) ventral plate with ramifying neotrichy.
