PUBI.,IC H E A L T H Mr. A. Royds, r~.zD., B.SC., Assistant Director of Education for Oldham, read a paper on " Child Psychology." Mr. Royds touched on most of theories as to growth of character and personality, and quoted MacDougall's theories of the seven primary instincts of man, indicating how a knowledge of them and .their functions by the School Dental Officer may prove of the utmost value in the handling of children in the dental clinic.
Welsh Sub-Group. The above Sub-Group has shown considerable activity during the winter and a meeting was held at Bridgend on January 20th. In the absence of the President, through illness, Mr. Quentin Davies took the chair. The meeting discussed the various points raised by members and reached the following conclusions :-(a) Diploma in Public Dentistry.--It was agreed that in principle the existence of this diploma was excellent, and that concessions should be made to those already in the service that they may have opportunities for the necessary study. (b) Senior Dental Officer.--Members were unanimous that the School Dental Service should have its own integral head, responsible to his Committee and having sole charge of the administration of his department. (c) Dental Dressers.--Disapproval of the principle involved was felt and members requested the opinion of the Council as the legality of this matter.
(d) Dental Letters and Public Assistance Cases.--The meeting agreed that the signing of these letters may endanger the professional position of the Dental Officer under present circumstances, and felt that steps should be taken to obviate this. Mr. Peach showed a casual communication, this being a model of a most unusual ease of supernumerary lower incisor. A meeting of the Sub-Group was held in the Wyndham Hotel, Bridgend, on Wednesday, March 8rd, 1987, at 7 p.m. The President, Mr. John Young, occupied the chair, and seven other members were present. Arising from the question of signing Dental Letters, the Hon. Secretary read correspondence between himself and the Medical Officer of Health of Glamorgan. Mr. Hevin Jones then opened a discussion of materials and methods of taking impressions by reading a paper o n " Plaster." He outlined the difficulties met with in mouth tissues and then described the chemical and physical properties of plaster and the correct way of mixing to ensure best results. The advantages were hygiene, accuracy and the yielding to soft tissue. In the discussion that followed members pointed out the advantages of plastics and many helpful hints were mentioned. A hearty vote of thanks to Mr. Hevin Jones was carried with acclamation. The next meeting was arranged for about April 14th, in Bridgend. 244
