BOOK REVIEWS A TEXT-BOOK OF FRACTURES AND DISLOCATIONS COVERING THEIR PATHOLOGY, DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT. By KeIIogg Speed, M.D., F.A.C.S. Ed. 3, rev. 111~1s.with 1042 Engravings. PhiIa., Lea and Febiger, 1935. This deservedly popuIar work is offered the profession in a third edition which has been thoroughIy revised. It follows the earlier editions in that it is pIanned to cover the whoIe subject of fractures and disIocations. In this edition many additiona iIIustrations, tracings from origina roentgenograms such as were used in previous editions, have been inserted. Many of the ihustrations have been redrawn. As an aid to the student and surgeon, a Iist of references to recent articIes has been added to most chapters. The bibIiography has been broadened, and the index amplified. The indications for operating and the techniques of various procedures are given conciseIy. An outstanding chapter is the one on the femur which incIudes descriptions of reconstructiona1 operations with fuII detaiIs of skin and skeIeta1 traction and overhead frame buiIding. We read in the pubIishers’ announcement : “However rare a specific fracture or disIocation may be, it is possibIe to turn to fuI1 information concerning it in this work.” This statement is 100 per cent true. This valuable work, brought up to date, is truly a four star publication and wiI1 continue to be invaIuabIe to students, as we11 as to anyone who handIes fractures and disIocations, whether he be speciahst or genera1 practitioner. MEDICINE AND HYGIENE. Rosenau, M.D. Ed. 6, D. Company, New York,

‘935. Twenty-two years ago the first edition of this book was offered the medica pubIic. Since then new editions came out in 1916, 1917, rgzr and 1927. This year the sixth edition comes from the presses. There is IittIe one can say of a book that has lived and grown through six editions except “the proof of the cake is in the eating.” No book can Iive through severa editions, covering a space of over two decades, unIess it is in a

cIass by itseIf. There is no argument among even the most critica but that this is true of Dr. Rosenau’s work. For those who are unfamiliar with this voIume we explain that the book may be said to be presented in two parts. Part one deaIs with the person (hygiene) and incIudes the prevention of the communicabIe diseases, venereal prophylaxis, heredity, immunity, eugenics, and simiIar subjects. Part two treats of the environment (sanitation), -and deaIs with our environment in its reIation to heaIth and disease and includes a discussion of food, water, air quhrasnOtlfhe di;~~~~oof a;~t~;he:‘;su$;io~~ sanitary importance,’ as we11 as subjects of interest to heahh officers. There are specia1 chapters on MentaI HyMyerson; Sewage and giene, by Abraham Garbage, by Gordon M. Fair; Vital Statistics, by John W. Trask; Statistical Methods, by Car1 R. Doering; Conservation of Vision, by J. Herbert Waite; and Contraception, by Eric M. Matsner. In every sense this is the best work on this subject to date. SOME THOUGHTS OF A DOCTOR. This is a series of some thirty essays previousIy printed in periodicaIs and covering subjects as wide apart as “Exercise, Work, Rest and SIeep” to “The ‘Rights’ of Nations Compared to the ‘Rights’ of Individuals and the Question of InternationaI Arbitration Courts.” They reveaI not only the author’s versatility but also a remarkabIy clear insight into both physical and psychoIogica1 probIems. Any attempt at an anaIytica1 review of this voIume wouId be futile. Suffice it, therefore, to say that it is a series of weII-written essays on many different subjects which are stimuIating to thought. THE CARE OF THE AGED, THE DYING AND THE DEAD.
