Axalta Coating Systems Inaugurates Refurbished Facility in Mexico Axalta Coating Systems has inaugurated a newly refurbished technology and R&D center for its powder coatings operations in Mexico. The facility also provides expanded capabilities for Axalta sales, technical services and product management staff who will be able provide enhanced quality and service to Axalta customers in the region. Axalta began its powder coatings operations in Apodaca 24 years ago, producing powder coatings for automobiles, home appliances, HVAC, architectural and electrical applications, gas pipes, and toys. Production from the adjacent powder coatings manufacturing facility is used in Mexico and exported to several countries in Latin America. During the inauguration event, some of Axalta’s powder coatings customers received an award acknowledging their long-lasting partnerships. News focus: global oil, TiO2, M&A to hit coatings The effects of crude oil, titanium dioxide (TiO2), China and mergers and acquisitions (M&A) on the coatings market were the main topics at The Coatings Summit in Miami, FL, US, in Jan 2015. The CEO of US-based Axalta Coatings Systems, the former performance coatings unit of DuPont, said that cheaper oil could increase paint demand in the long term from the refinishing industry and from the auto original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) segment. The refinishing sector is benefitting as motorists are encouraged to drive longer distances because of the lower crude oil prices. 4

He added that there is little impact on feedstock cost savings because only 20-30% of the firm's raw materials are commodities. However, the company may witness some savings in solvents and base resins if oil price remains low long enough. However, according to the CEO of Sweden-based Beckers Group, buyers are pressuring producers to lower coatings prices. The CEO of US-based RPM International said that the low oil prices should be beneficial in the long term but would create volatility, squeeze margins and threaten revenue growth in the short term. The CEO of US-based PPG Industries said that consolidation in the TiO2 industry should be balanced by growing capacity from Mexico and Asia that will lead to solid prices. Within the industry, DuPont formed Chemours, a spin off in its performance chemicals segment that is dominated by TiO2. Huntsman concluded the $1.275 bn deal to acquire Rockwood’s TiO2 segment. Separately, Huntsman is planning on decreasing TiO2 capacity. However, DuPont expects to commission its new 200,000 tonne/y facility in Altamira, Mexico, in 2016. Coatings companies are expected to be active in M&A. Axalta is planning to acquire businesses with $50-200 M in sales. US-based RPM International, which has 50 business units, acquires family-owned businesses and allows their management to stay on leading their firms. The acquisition of Mexicobased Comex of PPG Industries for $2.3 bn will give the company access to the country's middle class. The group general manager of Chinabased Carpoly said that China's coatings market is split, opening up to M&A potential. The country has nearly 7000 paints and coatings firms compared to 1000 in the US. The output value among the top ten firms in China stood at $7.9 bn in 2012 compared to the US at $16.3 bn. The CEO of India-based Berger Paints said that India's large rural population and its low auto ownership rate provides the nation a high development potential for paints and coatings. TECHNOLOGY Abcite thermoplastic powder coating application on pipe Axalta Coating Systems, a leading supplier of liquid and powder coatings, has received certification in MARCH 2015

F O C U S accordance with NSF/ANSI 61: Drinking Water System Components – Health Effects standards for its Abcite® thermoplastic powder coatings, which are used in a wide variety of industrial applications including pipes and fittings for drinking water systems. NSF International is a global independent public health and environmental organization responsible for standards development, as well as product testing and certification. NSF/ANSI 61 addresses the safety of products used in drinking water systems, with particular focus on potential adverse health effects To achieve certification, Axalta had to submit information on product formulation, toxicology and use, open its plant for audit, provide NSF International with a sample for laboratory product testing and undergo a full toxicology evaluation. This stringent process is designed to ensure that no potentially harmful chemicals leach into drinking water. All certified Abcite products will be identified by an NSF/ANSI 61 certification mark. This milestone will allow Axalta to further expand its global footprint into the pipe coating market by offering protective barrier coating solutions, from source to tap, for large and small scale water distribution systems throughout the world. Abcite thermoplastic coatings are formulated for toughness and chip resistance while also respecting the environment, as they contain zero VOCs. Used to protect water pipes, valves, filters and fittings, outdoor furniture and fittings – including fences, benches, lamp posts and playground equipment – as well as transportation, marine and offshore structures, this exceptional thermoplastic powder coating is applied as a single layer system without a primer undercoat. particles, which improve mechanical performance, enhance impact and flexibility, as well as cutting and drilling resistance of coatings. The popular Staphyloid AC-4030 and Staphyloid AC-3832SD have been successfully used for years in the powder coatings market across the world. The company also developed Staphyloid AC-4040 for thin film application of thermosetting powder coatings. The coating additive has comparable structure, chemical composition and hydroxyl functionality with AC-4030, but with agglomerates size of 10-18 microns on average. Staphyloid AC-4040 provides excellent dispersion into the resin and compatibility with all powder coating systems. AICA Kogyo exclusively distributes and commercialize its Staphyloid products in Europe and the Middle East through Omicron Europe in cooperation with Italy-based CAME Srl.

ability of the polyester composite coatings compared with the epoxy matrix to which the addition of MoS2 particles has a little effect on the friction-reducing mechanism. Finally, the investigation of the scratch resistance of the polyester or epoxy composite powder coatings filled with MoS2 confirms that the incorporation of MoS2 particles to either polyester or epoxy matrices leads to a significant decrease of the critical loads characterising the coating damage. From the residual depth trends and contact pressure analyses, the epoxy composite coatings reinforced by 5 wt.% of MoS2 are found to have a great scratch resistance response compared to the polyester composite reinforced by the same wt.% of MoS2.

AkzoNobel Powder Coatings Launches New Improved Architectural Warranty up to 30 years

Comparing the scratch resistance of thermosetting powder coatings The knowledge of the coating properties in terms of scratch and wear resistance is extremely important to prevent severe damage. A paper focused on the study of a comparative evaluation of the scratch and wear performance of two thermosetting powder coatings filled with different weight fractions of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) solid lubricant. The thermoset polyester and epoxy organic powder were deposited onto aluminum substrates by an electrostatic spray coating process. The effect of MoS2 solid lubricant on the friction and wear behavior of both polyester and epoxy composite powder coatings were assessed via reciprocating tribometer under dry friction conditions. The micro-mechanical performance of the scratch resistance of the composite coatings was conducted using progressive load scratch tests. The experimental findings of the tribological analysis have proven a significant reduction of the friction coefficient and a higher anti-wear
