Aqua-Chem awarded SWRO contract in the Turks and Caicos Islands

A

qua-Chem Inc is to supply a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant for the Turks and Caicos Islands in the West Indies. The 1136 m3/day plant features AquaChem’s process design and energy recovery technology and is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2013. It will be the fourth SWRO plant that Aqua-Chem has provided to the Turks and Caicos Islands government. This latest project is Aqua-Chem’s first joint venture with micro utilities developer Matrix Enviro Ltd, which is based in the Bahamas.

EBRD loan helps Romanian water utility improve services

T

he European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a loan of up to E13.85 million for a project to upgrade water and wastewater services in Valcea, Romania. The EBRD loan will help water utility SC APAVIL SA Ramnicu Valcea to improve the quality of its water supply, wastewater collection and treatment services in line with EU directives, and reduce water losses and operating costs. The loan will co-finance a regional investment programme approved by the EU under Romania’s Cohesion Fund Programme. The EBRD financing will consist of an EBRD loan of E8.55 million along with an envisaged loan of up to E5.30 million for green energy investments.

ardinian water services company Abbanoa SpA has awarded Acciona Agua a design, build and

commissioning contract for the island’s Siniscola drinking water treatment plant (DWTP). The new DWTP will meet the drinking water needs of up to 170 000 people in central and northeastern Sardinia.

Hungarian city selects GE MBR technology to meet new water reuse standards

T

he city of Veresegyház in Hungary will use GE ZeeWeed 500D ultrafiltration membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to increase water reuse at its water treatment plant. The plant’s wastewater treatment processes will be upgraded with four GE ZeeWeed 500D trains, eight cassettes and 288 modules. This will increase the plant’s treatment capacity to 5000 m3/day and improve the region’s water quality. Veresegyház, a suburb of Budapest, has been experiencing a freshwater shortage in recent years. The water treatment plant upgrade, which is in response to new regulations governing water reuse, will give Veresegyház access to more water for both industrial and residential use.

Marafiq extends Jacobs’ contract in Saudi Arabia

J

acobs Engineering Group Inc has received a one-year contract extension from Saudi Arabian utility company Marafiq to continue providing project management contractor services for its ongoing investment program in Saudi Arabia. Jacobs provides PMC services for a number of projects in Jubail and Yanbu industrial cities. The work includes conceptual design, front-end engineering, tender support, construction/commissioning supervision and other services necessary for successful capital program delivery. Projects include expansions, upgrades and installations of wastewater treatment plants, desalination plants and electrical power
