The recipient of the Achievement Award, born in Sherbrook, Quebec in 1939, received his B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from McGill University in 1962 and the MSc. in Nutrition from the same institution in 1966. He was granted his Ph.D. in Pharmacology-Toxicology by Queen’s University in 1970. In a career that extends over a IO-year period, he has made notable contributions to the solution of significant problems in various areas of toxicology. His early work with solvent extraction procedures in the preparation of fish flour revealed that toxic factors may develop when certain solvents are used. He was associated with the studies that demonstrated the myocardial toxicity of cobalt in human subjects in poor nutritional balance. One important phase of his work has been concerned with the recognition of the presence and identification of toxic contaminants in artificial sweetners. In addition to his contribution to the elucidation of these problems, he has also performed valuable work on the toxicity of halogenated vegetable oils, on ochratoxin A, and on methyl mercury and other heavy metal toxicants. Some 30 publications in the scientific literature are one result of these investigations; another consequence has been international recognition and invited participation in international meetings, symposia, and task forces.
