ACHIEVEMENT AWARD--1976

CURTIS DEAN KLAASSEN

The Society of Toxicclc gy presents its Achievement Award to a young scientist, less than 36 years of age, who has made significant and outstanding contributions to the science of toxicology. The recipient of the award this year has, in the first 33 years of his life, achieved a reputation in research and teaching that could be the envy of any career toxicologist. He has authored or coauthored more than 50 fulMength research papers in toxicology and pharmacology in the last decade, and he and his students have presented more than 30 papers at scientific meetings, including several at the annual meetings of this Society. Within the past 8 years he has moved through the academic ranks from Instructor to Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology at a leading midwestern medical school. A tribute to international recognition of his achievements in research was his appointment as Guest Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Bern, Switzerland, in 1975. He has contributed invited reviews and chapters to several outstanding monographs, and he serves as the Toxicology Field Editor for the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. His ability as a teacher has been described by a senior colleague as " s u p e r b . . . ranked as one of the top two or three lecturers in our department." recipient's research production as "amazing, both in quality and quantity." He is one of the world authorities in the area of biliary excretion of xenobiotics. Indeed, his research in this area has ranged from studies of the basic mechanisms of hepatic metabolism and disposition of a wide range of foreign chemicals to the investigation c f the influence of modification of these mechanisms on toxic actions in intact animals. The Achievement Award recipient received his B.A. degree magna eum laude from Wartburg College in 1964. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in pharmacology from the University of Iowa in 1966 and 1968, respectively. It represents a landmark in the history of this Society to note that this year's recipient was introduced to the science of toxicology by his Ph.D. mentor who was the first recipient of the Achievement Award of the Society. In recognition of his productive and significant research in toxicology, the Society of Toxicology is pleased to present the Ninth Achievement Award 1 to Dr. Curtis Dean Klaassen. i Award presented and citation read at the Annual Banquet of the Society of Toxicologyin Atlanta, Georgia, March 16, 1976.
