It takes an outstanding researcher with remarkable productivity and imagination to develop the enviable reputation in toxicology in lessthan 10 years which is that of the recipient of this award this year. Following completion of his Ph.D. degreein 1963, he becameinvolved in the area of inhalation toxicology and physiology and hascontinued in this field to the present time. It is unfortunate that many of the earlier reports of his scientific contributions are in the form of researchprogressreports in publications which 262

have restricted distribution. Nevertheless, his efforts have been directed to the development of methods and modelsand application of these to the resolution of problems in inhalation toxicology. His innovative approach, high personal standards, and tenacious pursuit of this subject has led to his recognition as an authority in this field in toxicology. He is an active participant in this and other societieswhich deal with toxicology. In the last 8 months he hasthree original articles in publication which deal with the effect of air-borne irritants and surfactants on pulmonary function. His technical capability in computer scienceand application of this scienceto inhalation studies has contributed significantly to the scienceof toxicology. In recognition of these achievements, the Society of Toxicology is pleasedto present the fifth Achievement Award to Dr. Yves Alarie.
