hroughout the 1989 Congress, time was set aside to recognize election winners and achievements of certain AORN members and chapters.
Board of Directors, Officers, Nominating Committee Members Delegates voted for Presidentelect,Treasurer, four members of the Board of Directors, and two members of the Nominating Committee. The following people were elected: Mark Phippen,
President-elect; Jeannie Bostford, Treasurer (reelected); Kay Ball, Board member (reelected); Ellen Murphy, Board member; Jane Rothrock, Board member (reelected); Maryann Papanier Wells, Board member (reelected); Sandra Gaylor, Nominating Committee; and Sheri Voss, Nominating Committee.

In a(xepting the Jerry G. Peers Distinguished Service Award, Dlana E. Petri says she hopes all Perioperative nurses “forge on to the future.” the 1988 recipient of the AORN Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing. The award was established by the Board of Directors in 1981 to recognize a registered nurse whose accomplishments in the areas of practice, education, or research reflect the goal of excellence in perioperative nursing. Groah has been in nursing for 25 years, and for 22 of those years she has been a member of AORN. She has worked as a staff nurse, clinical supervisor, director of nursing, and director of the OR. She has been involved in various national committees and served in several AORN offices. She has published numerous articles and a textbook on the perioperative role, and she has contributed to major nursing texts. She currently is director of nursing, operating room and postanesthesia care unit, University of California Hospitals and Clinics, San Francisco. Croah gave the closing address at Closing Session. It appears as “The Award for Excellence in Perioperative Nursing: The Sphere of Excellence” in this issue.
Jerry G. Peers Distinguished Service Award The Jerry G . Peers Distinguished Service Award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth, progress, and welfare of AORN. It is presented at the discretion of the Board of Directors. The award was presented this year to Dana Eastes Petri, RN, BBA, CNOR. Petri has been a nurse for 44 years and has attended Congress as a delegate or alternate delegate for 17 years. She had dreamed of using computers in the OR and of operating room nursing courses, and she helped make those dreams come true. She implemented an operating room nursing course for registered and graduate nurses and now manages the computerized scheduling for her department at The Methodist Hospital, Houston. She said she was surprised to have been selected as the award recipient, but added, “I think Jerry wouldn’t mind my having it.” 1275

Local Planning Committee Members of the 1989 Anaheim Local Planning Committee suggested program ideas, contacted volunteers, and helped the 1989 Congress run as smoothly as possible.
Chapter Excellence Awards One chapter in each region was recognized for best overall performance for membership growth, new projects, committee work, and other activities. The Membership Committee selected the winners based on their responses to a questionnaire regarding chapter activities. Sheri Voss, chairman, Membership Committee, presented chapter representatives with podium banners for their efforts.
Project Alpha Awards Eight chapters received Project Alpha Awards for 1278
their accomplishments in promoting perioperative experience for student nurses. Pat Moura, chairman, National Committee on Education, presented the certificates.
Journal Writers Contest AORN Journal articles authored by at least one AORN member are eligible for the AORN J o u m l Writers Contest, which is sponsored by Surgikos, Inc. Eligible articles are judged by the Journal Editorial Board for clarity, significance,originality, accuracy, and amount of editing. The top seven articles are sent to three independent judges for the final decision. Judges this ye& were Christina Stewart-Amidei, RN, MSN, editor of the Journal of Neuroscience Nursing Marie A. Darcy, RN, managing editor of Journal of Post Anesthesia Nursing and Joyce Black, RN, MSN, editor of Plastic Surgical Nursing. The first place award of $750 went to Joan
