212 Promotion
in Heterogeneous
Catalysis
The U.K. Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) have announced that a Faraday Division Symposium with this title will be held at the University of Bath from 23rd to 25th September 1986. The symposium will form the Faraday Division programme at the 1986 Autumn Meeting of the RSC. It will be conducted in the same way as Meetings, with the renowned Discussion preprinted papers and subsequent publication. The organisers point out that the role of promoters is of intrinsic interest as well as being important for many industrial processes and, because of the current advances in both experimental and theoretical aspects of the subject, that the time is ripe for such a symposium. Attention will be focussed on the role of promoters in enhancing activity selectivity, and particular attention being given to three areas: model studies using well-defined surfaces such as single crystals; characterisation of promoter function in real catalysts; and theoretical aspects of promotion. The mechanisms of promoter oxide action in metal, and sulphide catalysts will be discussed. Abstracts of possible contributions should be sent to the organisers before 30th November; see the Calendar for the address.
Coal and Gas Conversion
Conference
An international coal and gas conwill be held in conference version Pretoria, South Africa, from 24th to 27th August, 1987. This is a follow-up of the similar conference held in Pretoria in 1982, since when SASOL 2 and 3 exploitable have come into production, gas fields have come into production and technology has continued to relevant develop. This new conference will cover production topics such as synthesis gas from coal and natural gas, conversion of and to liquid fuels synthesis gas chemical feedstocks, coal liquefaction, example, downstream processing (for methanol conversion, conversion of lower olefins and hydrotreatment of syncrude), conversion simultaneous synergism in and catalysis, and energy generation, will conference future trends. The the opportunity for therefore provide delegates to meet people with first-hand constructing experience in designing, and operating conversion plants as well develas those in the forefront of new

ACS Symposium
Division
Spring
Meeting
The next meeting of the Petroleum Division of the American Chemical Society will be held in Atlantic City from 6th to 11th April 1986 and will include symposia on "Mechanisms of Fischer-Tropsch Chemistry", "Chemicals from Syngas and Methanol" and "Fundamental Chemistry of Promoters and Poisons in Heterogeneous Catalysis".
Post-Conference
Symposia
for 9th ICC
Several post-congress symposia are to be organised in Canada following the Ninth International Congress on Catalysis in Calgary in 1988 and others may be organised in the United States. To minimise conflicts between the topics of various symposia and to ensure appropriate advertising in YICC announcements, arrangements for these meetingds are being coordinated by Dr. Alan R. Sanger, Alberta Research Council, 11315-87th Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, T6G 2C2. Those who are currently planning post-congress symposia or who are considering the possibility are asked to communicate their plans or intentions to Dr. Sanger. American
