Hardmetals lecture series available from EPMA

EPMA has

a 16-/ecture ser ies on hardmetal production.

TIlE European Powder Metallurgy Association has published a lfl-part lecture series covering hardmetal production. The lectures are based on an English translation of the German series produced by the Fachverband Pulvermetallurgie, 'Pulvermetallurgie der lIartmetalle', and extend from the manufacture of hardmetal raw materials right through to the finished products. Each of the 16 lectures are published as selfcontained un its with colour slides and a comprehensive list of references to aid further study. The lectures cover: his torical development and intra-

duction to hardmetals; powder production for hardmetals; powder preparation; powder consolidation ; sintering ; CVD coating; PVD coating; chemical testing methods; physical testing methods;metallurgical analysis ; finishing; hardmetals in metal forming; hardmetals in chip forming ; hard metals in mining; andhardmetal components for the chemical Industry. The lectures are suitable for use in colleges and universities or for on-site training. European Powder Metal· lurgy Association; tel: + 44 1743·248899; fax: + 44 -1743362968.

AdmA International expands its metal powders business ADMA International of Twinsburg, Ohio, is moving into a 2800 m2 plant to accommodate the growth of its metal powders and titanium business. AdmA president, Dr Vladl mir Moxson, says the move will enable the company to double its inventory, allowing it to better serve the North American market with the metals it imports from Russia. The company distributes a range of metal powders and is the sole distributor

for high purity (99 .95%) chromium powder and flake made by Polema in Tula, Russia. The company also imported more than 450 tonnes of titanium during 1994, accounting for 90% of North American imports from Russia for the metal. TIC elects Barron as president THE Tantalum-Niobium International Study Center (TIC) has elected Robert Barron of Cabot Performance Materials in Boyertown, Pennsylvania, USA, as its new president. Barron, who succeeds Peter Kiihlert of H.C. Starck, was appointed to the post at the TIC's 36th general assembly held in Goslar, Germany, from 24-26 September. More than 250 experts and guests participated in the three-day event representing raw material suppliers, processors and end users. Companies based in Europe, North America, Australia and the Far East were all represented. Outgoing president Kiihlert told the conference that the

tantalum industry was on the rise again, mainly because of increas ing demand from the electronics industry. Worldwide output was now estimated at 10 billion tantalum capacitors/year with approximately 500 tonnes of tantalum powder required to meet this demand. An increase of more than 10%/year is expected in the future, with the strong demand largely stemming from the rapidly expanding markets in the electronics and electrical industries as well as the communication sector. MPIF equipment directory TIlE Powder Metallurgy Equipment Association (PMEA) has published a 150-page directory containing catalogues of major suppliers of equ ipment used to manufacture powder metallurgy (PM) parts and products made from metal powders and particulate materials. The PMEA is a division of the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF).

Technical information is given on compacting presses, tools and dies, sintering furnaces and atmospheres and metal grinding equipment. The directory also includes an 18·page product listing of association members. The directory is available free of charge from the MPIF. Kahlert elected ITIA president PETER Kiihlert, chairman of the executive board of H.C. Starck, has been elected president of the International Tungsten Industry Association (ITIA). lie was elected to the post at the lTIA's 8th annual general meeting held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 1921 September. Kiihlert takes the post at a buoyant time for both the tungsten industry and the ITIA. The tungsten market began to recover in 1994 after many years of recession and has maintained its impetus through the first half of 1995. Demand in 1994 in the market economy countries (MEC) rose by 50% compared with 1993, from 18350 tonnes to 27 600 tonnes (W content) , and seems likely to stay at the same level In 1995. The

Metal Bulletin quotations for tungsten compounds also rose rapidly last year, ammonium paratungstate (APT) by 150%, and have maintained the same levels during 1995. On the supply side, production in the MECs Is beginning to Increase again In response to higher prices, notable for the steady rise In exports of tungsten from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) . For the ITIA the upturn in the market has been reflected in a rise in membership from 38 companies in 1994 to 56 in 1995, including the first member from the CIS, AOOT "Tverdosplav", International 'fungsten In dustry Association; tel: + 44 171-5822777; fax: + -44--1715820556.
