Chimica Acta 347 (1997) 395-398

This Reference Edition contains all the scientific articles published in TrAC during 1995, including ‘computer corner’, the intemet column, and a number of longer feature articles, as well as a very large number of ‘trends’ articles. An important innovation is the appearance of four regional trends articles covering development in Malaysia, Vietnam, The Philippines and Bangladesh. As always, the wealth of information, presented in an easily read format, reflects the rapid and continuing development of analytical science worldwide, and is an essential source of information for anyone involved in analytical research and teaching.

Marian Hyman and Marvin W. Rowe, Advances in Analytical Geochemistry, Vol. 2, JAI Press, Greenwich, CT, 1995 (ISBN l-55938-785-8). x+344 pp. Price E69.50. The tremendous power of modern analytical techniques has an impact in a wide variety of scientific disciplines, no more so than in geochemistry, where the ability to carry out extremely sensitive, rapid and highly selective analyses is much appreciated. This series is intended to provide^timely and authoritative reviews of recent developmentsrl in analytical geochemistry. This second volume deals with ion microprobe mass spectrometry, as applied to very small particles, laser extraction of noble gases, solid state NMR spectroscopy, compound-specific stable isotope measurements by GC-combustion-IRMS, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and multivariate statistical techniques for trace analysis. Each review is well illustrated and fully referenced, and there is a good subject index.

This second edition has been somewhat reorganised and updated and has two new and very necessary chapters, on capillary electrophoresis (Rabel and Stobaugh) and supercritical fluid chromatography of bulk and formulated pharmaceuticals (Stewart and Jagota).

This is a collection of papers presented at the Ion-Ex ‘95 Conference (the 4th in the series) held at the N.E. Wales Institute, Wrexham, UK, September 1995, under the sponsorship of The Society of Chemical Industry and The Royal Society of Chemistry. There are five themes, each headed by a plenary lecture, which were: Novel materials and applications (12 papers), ion chromatography and electrophoresis (9), resins as biosorbents (5), ion exchange for environmental clean-up (18) and ion exchange in inorganic materials and its theory (12). All the articles are clearly reproduced, and together provide a useful account of present achievements and future trends in a subject that is again in vogue in analytical and other areas.

J.A. Greig (Ed.), Ion exchange Developments and Applications, The Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, UK, 1996 (ISBN o-85404-726-3). xv+560 pp. Price g89.50. This book comprises the Proceedings of IBX’96 (not to be confused with Ion-Ex, in the immediately preceding review), the 7th SC1 conference on Ion Exchange Developments and Applications held at Churchill College, Cambridge, UK, July 1996. The papers are grouped as follows: water treatment (13 papers), environmental and pollution control (7), nuclear (3), resin developments (6), fundamentals (9), inorganic materials (7), hydrometallurgy (12), and separations (13). Again, the reproduction of the material is very clear, but the subject index is very brief.
