Guide for Authors These instructions for authors can also be found on the Internet. Please access via the Elsevier Author Gateway: http://authors. elsevier.com and http://intl.elsevierhealth.com/journals/burn. Submission of papers. Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures online via http://ees.elsevier.com/burn. This is the Elsevier web-based submission and review system. You will find full instructions located on this site - a Guide for Authors and a Guide for Online Submission. Please follow these guidelines to prepare and upload your article. Once the uploading is done, our system automatically generates an electronic pdf proof, which is then used for reviewing. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor’s decision and requests for revisions, will be managed via this system. If you have any problems submitting your paper through this system, please contact the editorial office on: e-mail: burns@ elsevier.com; tel: +44 (0)1865 843884; fax: +44 (0)1865 843992. A paper is accepted for publication on the understanding that it has been contributed solely to this journal, and that articles and illustrations become the property of the journal, unless the authors state, before publication, that they reserve the rights to themselves. If any illustrations, diagram or part of the text have been published elsewhere the source must be given in full, permission having been granted by the author and by the publisher. The Editor reserves the right to make editorial and literary corrections. No major alterations or corrections will be made without the knowledge and consent of the author. Three copies of the text of the paper should be submitted with three complete sets of illustrations. Manuscripts should be accompanied by a covering letter signed by each named author, affirming that the paper has been submitted solely to Burns and that it is not concurrently under consideration for publication in any other journal. Authors are advised to keep a copy of everything submitted. A fax number for the corresponding author should be supplied if possible. Papers may be presented as original articles. The authors are urged to write concisely. The text should read easily and the relevant literature should be summarized as concisely as possible. In the interest of space and prompt publication, unnecessary experimental detail and exhaustive lists of references should be avoided. Papers must be submitted in Journal style. The text should be typewritten on A4 paper (210 297 mm) with double spacing on a 4-cm margin all round. Each of the following sections should begin on a new page: title page; summary; text; acknowledgements; references; tables; legends for illustrations. At the final revision stage, authors will be invited to submit the text for publication on a computer disk. Detailed notes and guidelines will be available from both the Editor and Publishers. All clinical studies must contain within the text of each manuscript a statement that all experimental protocols have been approved by the Ethical Committee of the Institution, prior to the commencement of the studies. All patients, or their guardians, must have given their written consent to the studies after they have received appropriate information. With respect to experimental animal studies, similar Ethical Committee approval of the protocols must have been obtained before the start of the studies. Thermal, electrical, chemical and smoke inhalation injuries must only be inflicted on animals that have been anaesthetized, the type of anaesthetic agent and the dosage used being described in detail in the text. Subsequent post-injury care of the animals should conform to accepted standards, for instance those promulgated by the US National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by selected referees and subsequently, the author will be informed of editorial decisions based on the referee comments, as soon as possible. If you do not receive anything 6 weeks after the acknowledgement, feel free to contact the Editorial Office, preferably by e-mail. On receipt of the first decision letter authors should submit their revised manuscript within three months to http://ees.elsevier.com/ burn in order to ensure that the scientific content of their manuscript is timely and up to date. Title Page. This should give the following information: title of the article; names, initials and appointment held by each author; name of the department or institution to which the work should be attributed and name and address of the author responsible for correspondence. Summary. The second page should carry a summary of not more than 200 words. It should embody the purpose of the study or investigation, basic procedures (study material, observational and analytical methods), main findings (with specific data and their statistical significance) and the principal conclusions. Tables. Each Table with an appropriately brief title should be numbered and typed on a separate page. No vertical lines should be used. All tables should be referred to in the text.

When submitting via the online system, authors are required to provide electronic versions of their illustrations. When an article has been accepted, authors must be prepared to provide all illustrations in electronic and camera-ready format. Information relating to the preferred formats for artwork may be found at http://authors. elsevier.com, and also on the online submission homepage http:// ees.elsevier.com/burn. Submitting your artwork in an electronic format helps us to produce your work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail. Always supply high-quality printouts of your artwork, in case conversion of the electronic artwork is problematic. Make sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork. Save text in illustrations as ‘‘graphics" or enclose the font. Only use the following fonts in your illustrations: Arial, Courier, Helvetica, Times, Symbol. Number the illustrations according to their sequence in the text. Use a logical naming convention for your artwork files, and supply a separate listing of the files and the software used. Provide all illustrations as separate files and as hardcopy printouts on separate sheets. Provide captions to illustrations separately. Produce images near to the desired size of the printed version. Files can be stored on 3½ inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MSDOS or Macintosh). A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our website: http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork Colour Reproduction Submit colour illustrations as original photographs, high-quality computer prints or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35 mm slides. Polaroid colour prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to ‘grey scale’ (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations. References. All references listed in the References at the end of the article must be cited in the text. References should be indicated in the text by consecutive superscripts, i.e. 1,2 or 1–3. Where a reference is cited more than once in the text, the same number should be used each time. References should take the following form: 1. Zapata-Sirvent RL and Hansbrough JF. Temporal analysis of human leucocyte surface antigen expression and neutrophil respiratory burst activity after thermal injury. Burns 1993; 19, 5–11. 2. Muir IFK, Barclay TL and Settle JAD. Burns and their Treatment, 3rd ed. Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann, 1987. 3. Bondy PK. Disorders of the adrenal cortex. In: Wilson JD and Foster DW, eds. Williams Text Book of Endocrinology, 7th ed. Philadelphia: Saunders, p.816. The titles of journals should be abbreviated as in Index Medicus. If there are six of fewer authors, they should be all listed; if there are seven or more, the first three authors should be listed, followed by et al. Abbreviations and units of measurement. It is the journal policy to use SI units except for measurements of blood pressure where mmHg is preferred. For more detailed recommendations authors should consult Baron D.N. (ed.) (1977) Units Symbols and Abbreviations: A Guide for Biological and Medical Editors and Authors, 3rd Ed. London, Royal Society of Medicine. Conflict of interest statements for authors. At the end of the text, under a subheading ‘‘Conflict of interest statement", all authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work, all within 3 years of beginning the work submitted. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. Proofs. Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified on multi-authored papers) by PDF wherever possible and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt, preferably by e-mail. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments made may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one allinclusive e-mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete. Should you choose to mail your corrections, please return them to: Log-in Department, Elsevier Science, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.
