Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and figures online via http://ees.elsevier.com/burn. This is the Elsevier web-based submission and review system. Once the uploading is done, our system automatically generates an electronic pdf proof, which is then used for reviewing. The authors are urged to write concisely. The text should read easily and the relevant literature should be summarized as concisely as possible. In the interest of space and prompt publication, unnecessary experimental detail and exhaustive lists of references should be avoided. Papers must be submitted in Journal style. The text should be typewritten on A4 paper (210 297 mm) with double spacing on a 4-cm margin all round. Each of the following sections should begin on a new page: title page; summary; text; acknowledgements; references; tables; legends for illustrations. At the final revision stage, authors will be invited to submit the text for publication on a computer disk. Detailed notes and guidelines will be available from both the Editor and Publishers. All clinical studies must contain within the text of each manuscript a statement that all experimental protocols have been approved by the Ethical Committee of the Institution, prior to the commencement of the studies. All patients, or their guardians, must have given their written consent to the studies after they have received appropriate information. With respect to experimental animal studies, similar Ethical Committee approval of the protocols must have been obtained before the start of the studies. Thermal, electrical, chemical and smoke inhalation injuries must only be inflicted on animals that have been anaesthetized, the type of anaesthetic agent and the dosage used being described in detail in the text. Subsequent post-injury care of the animals should conform to accepted standards, for instance those promulgated by the US National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by selected referees and subsequently, the author will be informed of editorial decisions based on the referee comments, as soon as possible. If you do not receive anything 6 weeks after the acknowledgement, feel free to contact the Editorial Office, preferably by e-mail. On receipt of the first decision letter authors should submit their revised manuscript within three months to http://ees.elsevier.com/ burn in order to ensure that the scientific content of their manuscript is timely and up to date. Title Page. This should give the following information: title of the article; names, initials and appointment held by each author; name of the department or institution to which the work should be attributed and name and address of the author responsible for correspondence. Summary. The second page should carry a summary of not more than 200 words. It should embody the purpose of the study or investigation, basic procedures (study material, observational and analytical methods), main findings (with specific data and their statistical significance) and the principal conclusions. Tables. Each Table with an appropriately brief title should be numbered and typed on a separate page. No vertical lines should be used. All tables should be referred to in the text.

When submitting via the online system, authors are required to provide electronic versions of their illustrations. When an article has been accepted, authors must be prepared to provide all illustrations in electronic and camera-ready format. Information relating to the preferred formats for artwork may be found at http://authors. elsevier.com, and also on the online submission homepage http:// ees.elsevier.com/burn. Submitting your artwork in an electronic format helps us to produce your work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail. Always supply high-quality printouts of your artwork, in case conversion of the electronic artwork is problematic. Make sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork. Number the illustrations according to their sequence in the text. Use a logical naming convention for your artwork files, and supply a separate listing of the files and the software used. Provide all illustrations as separate files and as hardcopy printouts on separate sheets. Provide captions to illustrations separately. Produce images near to the desired size of the printed version. Files can be stored on 3½ inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MSDOS or Macintosh). Polaroid colour prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to ‘grey scale’ (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.
