Aims and Objectives of The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy A statement on the future strategies of the Society was published in the July 1988 issue of Physiotherapy (pages 310-311). Members' views were invited and some new items were added when progress was reviewed by Council and committees this year. The stated functions of the CSP and its overall policies and aims have not changed. This paper shows how far the immediate objectives of the Society have been achieved. Members wanting more information on particular issues are advised to consult their Board representative to Council. The objectives are given in Roman type, followed by action taken and comments in italics.
Professional Affairs

Confront issues of inter-professional overlaps and boundaries. Consultation document issued, and reactions reported in journal.
Provide support for research, possibly through a research foundation. Foundation launched July 1989; research liaison officer in post.
Press Government to recognise the CSP as a competent authority for the profession under the terms of the EC directive on the general system for the recognition of Higher Education Diplomas; and t o achieve appropriate regulatory arrangements. CSP working party established; request for formal designation as competent authority made; Bye Law amendments proposed; twith t w o other professions) Government asked for review of PSM Act 1960. Complete work on the definition of core skills in physiotherapy, on the established applications of those skills and the approach t o be adopted in developing innovatory applications. Document on the practice of physiotherapy published in Journal, and endorsed by Council in March 7989. Agree and implement arrangements for recognition of Clinical Interest Groups. Most groups have applied and been recognised. Develop information services within the CSP. Research liaison officer appointed and studying needs. Facilitate quality assurance in physiotherapy. CSP Quality Assurance Working Party established. Active participation in Kings Fund QA project. Actively promote the interpretation of the Rules of Professional Conduct in day-to-day practice. Education Affairs Develop a structure for postgraduate and continuing education and the related recognition of specialisations within the profession. Progress reviewed by Education Committee and further work on types of course in hand. Complete the process of internalisation of pre-registration courses. Twenty-two courses approved. Five courses to start September 1989. Three courses to start September 1990. Set up a conference and seminar unit within the CS!? Officer appointed and developing business plan.

Service Conditions Establish and maintain a campaign t o increase awareness, of members and the public, of implications of Government's proposals on the reform of the NHS. New item. Take measures t o prepare for the de-centralisation of NHS bargaining on pay and conditions. New item. Develop strategies to support members through any future changes. Campaign for additional resources for the NHS. Complete negotiations on a revised NHS grading structure. Negotiations in abeyance. Agree w i t h Government a manpower plan for the whole profession and take appropriate action, including action t o deal with the shortage of teachers. Physiotherapy Manpower Consultative Group considering report. Revised policy on teacher qualifications agreed. Promote positive attitudes towards equal opportunities and part-time physiotherapists and reach appropriate agreements w i t h employers. Education Committee considering policy on equal opportunities on recruitment. Policy on part- timers published. Consider ways t o produce better co-operation w i t h PT'A' and FPO organisations at a local level. New item.
CSP Management Establish an Annual Representatives Conference structure that provides an input t o policy making from a broad spectrum of members. First conference to be held in September. Fursue the recommendations of the Board and Branch review t o ensure that local units respond t o local needs. Review of Branch boundaries completed and being implemented. Further study of other aspects of the review in hand. Commission the new Jockeys Fields building. Building now in full use. Develop and implement, in consultation w i t h the union representatives, personnel management policies for the Society's staff, particularly in the field of staff development.
