AkzoNobel opens $10 M Research Facility in the US AkzoNobel has opened a new research, development and innovation (RD&I) center in Strongsville, OH, US. The $10 M facility will support several of the company's Performance Coatings businesses, including coil, extrusion and packaging coatings. Featuring full testing, scale-up and analytical capabilities, it will house more than 120 staff, including 65 highly trained scientists and technicians. The Strongsville center is the latest in a series of investments to strengthen AkzoNobel's research capabilities in the region. The company recently announced that it is investing around EUR 3 M to expand its RD&I capabilities in Houston, TX. The Houston facility will support the company's Protective Coatings, Marine Coatings and Specialty Coatings businesses.

Axalta Upgrades its Facility for NapGard FBE Powder Coatings Axalta Coating Systems has announced the enrichment of its Nap-Gard fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) powder coatings. Through its continuous improvement efforts, Axalta has bolstered the manufacturing process with facility enhancements. In addition, Axalta has announced a new series of product designations with the reorganization of its Nap-Gard FBE powder coatings product line under a newly designated 7-2500 series. The Nap-Gard 7-2500 series brings industry recognized FBE powder coatings into one group and expands the benefits of its thermosetting epoxy powder for onshore and offshore oil and gas pipelines. Combining Nap-Gard FBE powder coating product numbers 7-2500, 7-2501, 7-2508FG, 7-2508 and 7-2508LG into one family allows customers to choose the product needed for their application in the color they desire. Nap-Gard 7-2500 series powders are National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certified and meet ISO 21809-1 and CSA Z245.20.14 requirements. Nap-Gard

series powder coatings are suitable for even the most demanding performance requirements set by industry standards and can be used as a single anti-corrosive layer or as the primer in a dual layer or multilayer system. This family of powders is fast curing, damage resistant, thermosetting and hazardous air pollutant (HAP)-free, and has excellent adhesion to steel with good chemical resistance.

BASF Opens Center to Support ASEAN Customers BASF has inaugurated an expanded 2300 sq m Coatings Technical Competence Center ASEAN in Bangpoo, Bangkok, Thailand. It aims to serve the automotive sector in Southeast Asia with its innovative facilities and laboratory for product development, color design, performance testing. The center also has a manufacturing line.

PPG begins using Chloride-based TiO2 from Henan Billions in Coatings Production PPG Industries has begun using chloridegrade titanium dioxide (TiO2) produced in commercial quantities by Henan Billions Chemicals Co Ltd, including PPG's licensed chloride-based technology. PPG is using the TiO2 to produce standard grades of its coatings products. The 366,000 sq m plant that produced the chloride-grade TiO2 is located in the Henan Province of China and currently has capacity to produce 100,000 tonnes/y of chloride-grade TiO2 with the capability to expand. Under an agreement established in 2012, PPG licensed certain chloride-based technologies for the manufacture of TiO2 to Henan Billions for use on a global basis.

C OAT I N G S PPG has supported the start-up of Henan Billions' new chloride process plant with quality and process improvements, analytical testing support and product evaluations. PPG also may license its technology to other TiO2 producers.

BASF Strengthening Global Network for Pigment Production BASF is strengthening its global production network for pigments with two new investments. At the site in Nanjing, China, the company has increased its production capacities for high-performance diketopyrrolopyrrole pigments (DPP). In Ludwigshafen, Germany, BASF is going to expand its capacities for the production of versatile alpha blue pigments, which are particularly characterized by their excellent fastness properties, by the fall of 2016. The color-intensive and extremely lightfast and weatherproof DPP pigments, which are marketed by BASF under the product name Irgazin, are - among other applications used for automotive, industrial and powder coatings, paints and inks as well as for plastic applications. By expanding its capacities in Nanjing, BASF has responded to the ever-increasing demand for highperformance pigments, particularly in AsiaPacific.
