US manufacturer of air filtration and noise control systems Altair Filter Technology Inc has received an order for its Aquila gas-turbine air-intake filtration systems for use in an oilfield in Azerbaijan. The company is to supply a total of 19 systems, which will be used to protect Rolls-Royce RB211 turbines that operate in the Azeri field, which is part of the Azeri Chirag, Deepwater Gunashli development. According to Altair, Aquila is an extremely compact air intake filtration system that is designed to protect turbines operating in offshore and coastal locations. It says that such turbines are subject to the combined effects of bulk water, precipitation, airborne particulate and salt aerosol. To protect engines from these contaminants the system uses a combination of inertial separation and high efficiency filtration stages. It also removes dry particulates. This is achieved primarily through its high efficiency filters augmented, when required, by a prefilter. The level of filtration provided also can be tailored to suit the environment using a range of high efficiency filters. Onshore turbines associated with the oilfield are protected by Altair's SuperNova, a compact air intake filtration system that has been developed to protect landbased turbines operating in industrial and other onshore locations. The company has also provided filtration systems for two Alstom Tornado gas turbines, on the Chirag 1 platform in the Azeri Chirag, Deepwater Gunashli field.
