MATERIALS Magnesium hydroxide based fire retardant Zerogen fire retardant from Huber Solem Division, is a halogen-free composition based on magnesium hydroxide. It can impart both flame retardance and smoke suppression to a wide variety of thermoplastics and elastomeric Because it has temperature formulations. stability to 332°C (630”F), it is said to be effective in the processing of a wide variety of thermoplastic resins. The use of Zerogen allows for the development of lower smoke ratings than can normally be obtained by the use of halogenated flame retardant additives. Specific grades include: Zerogen 10 a fine particle-sized magnesium hydroxide that can impart both flame retardance and smoke suppression to a wide variety of thermoplastic and elastomeric formulations; Zerogen 15, which is modified for ease of dispersion. These modifications may also favourably affect flow properties, retention of impact strength and resistance to water permeation; Zerogen 30, a fine particle-sized magnesium hydroxide that can impart both flame retardance and smoke suppression to a wide variety of thermoplastic and elastomeric formulations; Zerogen 35 which has been modified for ease of dispersion. These modifications may also favourably affect flow properties, retention of impact strength and resistance to water permeation. It is especially recommended for polypropylene. At a 60% loading in a polypropylene homopolymer Zerogen 35 has yielded a Flame Retardant Rating of UL 94-VO at l/8” and Notched Izod Impact of lSft-lb/in. Zerogen 60 is a medium particle-sized magnesium hydroxide that can impart both flame retardance and smoke suppression to a wide variety of thermoplastic and elastomeric formulations. Alumina trihydrate based fire retardants Micra1 1000 is a smoke suppressor/flame retardant from Huber Solem Division. Features and benefits are said to include: excellent performance, handling, and processing characteristics, low soluble soda and free moisture content, and exceptional brightness. Applications include wire and cable insulation (can be processed at temperatures up to 200°C without porosity), injection moulded polyolefins, coatings, adhesives, rubber goods, PVC, EPDM, EPR, XLPE, EVA, and compression moulded thermosets. A complete range of surface modifications are offered, such as silanes, stearates, wetting agents and processing aids. Micra1 1500 is claimed to be an economical smoke suppressor/flame retardant. Features and benefits are similar to Micra1 1000 and include: excellent performance, handling, and processing characteristics, low soluble soda and free moisture content, and exceptional brightness. Applications include wire and cable insulation, (can be processed at temperatures up to 200°C without porosity), injection moulded polyolefins, coatings, adhesives, rubber goods, PVC, EPDM, EPR, XLPE, EVA, and compression moulded thermosets. Titanium dioxide pigment for high loadings in masterbatch R-104 titanium pigment from Du Pont is designed to provide optical and rheological performance at high loadings in masterbatch formulations. The company say that it will allow polyoletin producers to achieve much higher ratios of R-104 to resin. This will
