AMERICAN BOARD OF ORTHODONTICS
GORP Meeting held August 8-10, 1997 Following are comments from past ABO President Dale Wade's address given on August 9th. On behalf of the American Board of Orthodontics and its current president, Eldon Bills, I welcome you to The Ohio State University, home of the 1997 Rose Bowl Champions. The American Board of Orthodontics encourages each of you to become Board certified within the next decade. Phase II Written Examination. A frequently asked question is, "What should I study for the Phase II written examination?" Page 114 of the July 1996 issue of the AJO/DO lists the 27 subjects that must be taught at each ADA accredited orthodontic program. Questions on the written examination are based on these subjects. Phase III Clinical Examination. Candidates now have two options that can be used to meet the clinical requirements for Board certification. Candidate Case Report Examination (CCRE). Option I is the set of procedures that has been used for the past 10 years. Candidates who use Option ! are required to present a case report from each of the 10 case record categories specified in the Information for Candidates booklet. Option II, new this year, is the Board's effort to allow a candidate to begin certification immediately after graduation from an accredited program. The procedure is as follows. Candidates will present pretreatment records of 12 patients to their constituent ABO director. The records must be from categories 1 through 8 with no more than two from any one category. The pretreatment records must have been made within 6 months of presentation to the director. The candidate has 4 years from the next scheduled Phase III clinical examination to present 6 completed case reports from the original 12 records chosen. These 6 case reports will be examined in the same manner as the 10 case reports are examined should the candidate choose Option I. More detailed information on these options is published in Information for Candidates, 4th edition, which is a v a i l a b l e on t h e I n t e r n e t at:
Phase I in 1998 will be given 15-year certificates on the completion of certification. After 15 years of certification, a Diplomate will have the opportunity to become recertified for another 15 years. James McNamara, the "Godfather of GORR" would like experienced orthodontists to give advice to the residents gathered at this annual summer meeting. Here are some "pearls" I have gleaned from many of my mentors over the past 32 years. Edward Hissett taught at The Ohio State University and University of North Carolina. He told us "never put off an adjustment until the next month." Arthur Lewis, the past editor of the Angle Orthodontist, said, "Treat your patients as you would want to be treated." Charles Tweed said to those of us in his last class in October 1969, "Spend time with your family." Larry Andrews, who graduated from OSU in 1958, told our residents, "Make good records from the first day. If you are going to spend the time, then document well what you do." Ben Williams, a former chair of our OSU department, said, "Tie your rotations early." My father, Robert Wade, often told me, "Learn more than one way to solve a problem." Robert Ricketts has said many times, "Be sure to love your patients." My advice is, "Work hard, enjoy your work, be sure to have fun, and, most important, put your patients first." In addition, it is important to set goals for yourself on an annual basis, but not too many. Goals help you to continue to improve, and an excellent goal is to become certified by the American Board of Orthodontics. Preparing for ABO certification will probably be the best continuing education course you will ever take. It has been said that "taking your Boards may not make you better than the orthodontist down the street, but it will make you better than Z ~ were before." All of the ABO directors wish you all the best of good health and happiness in your chosen specialty. If you have any questions or concerns about the certification process, you can speak with the director in your own constituency. Many answers are also available on our Web site at http:\\www.americanboardortho.com. The e-mail address is amboard@ stlnet.com. Thank you for your attention, and enjoy the rest of your stay at OSU.
