American Nurses Association revamps campaigns to support healthy nurses Kelly Putnam, Managing Editor
T
he American Nurses Association (ANA) advocates for the safety and wellness of all RNs and nursing students in the United States. The association defines a healthy nurse as “one who actively focuses on creating and maintaining a balance and synergy of physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, personal, and professional wellbeing. A healthy nurse lives life to the fullest capacity, across the wellness/illness continuum, as they become stronger role models, advocates, and educators, personally, for their families, their communities and work environments, and ultimately for their patients.”1
can take a brief health survey related to activity, rest, nutrition, safety, and quality of life and use resources provided by ANA to make specific commitments to improve their health.
Year of the Healthy Nurse
Call to action
The ANA dedicated 2017 as the “Year of the Healthy Nurse.”2 Each month, the ANA will provide resources related to scheduled topics, which include nutrition, combatting stress, women’s health, men’s health, healthy sleep, happiness, and more.2 Nurses can share their experiences and promote nurse health and safety on social media by including the #FitNurseFriday and #healthynurse tags in their posts.
Perioperative RNs have the opportunity to be active role models of healthy living. I encourage you to participate in the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation campaign when it fully launches in May 2017.1 By participating in health risk appraisals, you can help inform what measures are taken by facilities to support safety and wellness among perioperative RNs as well as RNs working in other specialties. By engaging with your colleagues on social networks, you can support one another to become healthy role models for the rest of the nation.
Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation In January 2017, the ANA launched a new campaign called Healthy Nurse, Health Nation. The goal of this campaign is to help promote health and wellness among the nation’s 3.6 million nurses so they can become effective role models for healthy living among the general population. Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation supports nurses and nursing students incorporate better wellness strategies in their daily lives.1 “A key part of the initiative is a dynamic web platform designed to capture baseline health data and encourage social networking within the platform,” said Holly Carpenter, BSN, RN, senior policy advisor for nursing practice and innovation at ANA. The health survey component of this initiative will be an updated version of the health risk appraisal that ANA provided to RNs and nursing students between 2013 and 2016. This appraisal asked nurses about their work environments, safety risks, and lifestyle habits. Results collected from perioperative RNs from 2013 through early 2016 are the focus of this month’s lead feature article.
