An Invitation from the President
N
ow that summer is over and a new academic year is well underway, I hope that everyone has preregistered for our 41st Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions to be held in Anaheim, California, October 27-30. Dr. W . Gerald Rainer and his Scientific Program Committee have put together a truly outstanding meetingone you cannot afford to miss. All members of the College will have received a complete Preliminary Program, and an overview is included in this issue of CHEST. Therefore, I will only summarize some of the highlights. Monday morning, October 27, will begin with meetings of our Scientific Committees. Simultaneously, the first two of three all day postgraduate courses will be held embodying the theme of The Health Team Approach to the Management of Cardiopulmonary Diseases. One is entitled "Cardiopulmonary Assessment of the Critically Ill" and is sponsored jointly with the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The other is entitled "Heart-Lung Perfusion and Intra-aortic Balloon Pumping" and is sponsored jointly by the American Society for Extracorporeal Technology." The third of these postgraduate courses, entitled "Physician-Therapist Team Approach to Respiratory Care," will be held on October 30, and is sponsored jointly by the American Association for Respiratory Therapy. Dr. Jack Matloff and his General Arrangements Committee have organized 20 outstanding Clinic Visits for Monday afternoon. These will be presented by representatives of the major medical centers of California, and due to distances, all will be held in the Anaheim Convention Center. On Monday evening, seven Scientific Seminars will be presented by the Committees on Bronchoesophagology, Cancer, Coronary Diseases, Hypertension, Preventive Cardiology, Respiratory Physiology, and Respiratory Therapy. Tuesday morning, October 28, 1975, begins with the first of three Sunrise Sessions with Dr. Leland C. Clark, Jr. delivering the Distinguished Lectureship in Physiology. Subsequent Sunrise Sessions will feature Dr. H. J. C. Swan, the Honorary Fellow for 1975, speaking on "lmpedence Reduction in the Therapy of Power Failure of the Heart," and Dr. Storey Musgrave speaking on "Adventures in Space Medicine." Tuesday afternoon's session will begin with a special lecture by Dr. Paul C. Samson, the College Medalist, on "Decortication Then and Now," and Wednesday afternoon's session will begin with a special lecture by Dr. Michael E. DeBakey (recipient of the Presidential Citation) on "Dissecting Aneurysms of the Aorta- Analysis of a 20 Year Experience." Eight major symposia will be presented by leaders in their respective fields. On Tuesday, October 28, 1975,
these will be entitled "Use of Ventilators," "Arrhythmias in the Pulmonary Patient," and "Effects of Hypoxia on Lung Function." Symposia for Wednesday, October 29, 1975, will be entitled "Diagnosis of Chest Pain," "Is Coronary Surgery Here to Stay?" and "Lung Cancer 1975: Environmental Factors in Carcinogenesis." Symposia for Thursday, October 30, 1975, will be entitled "Infectious Diseases" and "Postoperative Complications." Simultaneous Tutorial Sessions will be repeated morning and afternoon on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. These will cover the subjects of "Clinical Significance of Pulmonary Function Tests," "Echocardiography, Phonocardiography and Pulse Waves and Recent Advances in Clinical Vectorcardiography," "Diagnostic Techniques in Pulmonary Diseases," "Clinical Problems in Cardiopulmonary Disease (Difficult Decisions for the Physician)," "Demonstration and Discussion- Gross Pathology of the Heart," and "Demonstration and Discussion -Gross Pathology of the Lungs." This year's Scientific Program Committee had a most difficult task, as more than 400 abstracts were submitted (including the Young Investigator Award) . From these abstracts (excluding Young Investigator Award abstracts) 117 were selected for inclusion in the scientific program and will be presented during simultaneous sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Scientific motion pictures also will be shown simultaneously with the symposia and tutorial sessions. Additionally, on Tuesday afternoon the Cecile Lehman Research Forum will be presented and on Wednesday afternoon the Research in Progress Forum will be presented. Five luncheon panels will be held each day on Tuesday, W'ednesday and Thursday, and six Fireside Conferences will be held on Tuesday night. These panels and conferences will provide coverage of 21 different subjects of current interest throughout the field of cardiopulmonary medicine and surgery. Of special interest will be the Louis Mark Memorial Lecture, which will be presented at the Convocation on Wednesday evening, October 29, 197.'5, by Dr. Theodore Cooper, recently appointed Assistant Secretary for Health of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. As you can see, this will be a most educational and outstanding meeting. Additionally, don't forget to visit the Technical Exhibits. Representatives of a large number of companies will be available to demonstrate and explain their latest developments. Not only are such demonstrations and discussions extremely educational in themselves, but one also must remember that the financial support of these exhibitors makes possible a meeting such as this. I certainly look forward to seeing everyone in Anaheim.
