BOOK REVIEWS Microwave Materials & Fabrication Techniques 2nd Edition by Thomas Laverghetta. Published by Artech House, 685 Canton Street, Norwood, MA 02062 USA. Tel/fax: (617) 769 9750 / 6334. Until the advent of the monolithic microwave IC, microwave circuit assembly techniques have made exclusive use of microwave integrated circuit technology. This book is devoted to its practical aspects. Aptly the book begins with questions the prospective engineer might ask and successive chapters offer answers. The reader is shown how best to match substrate materials to the job and is then introduced to the metals technology and with packaging in particular. We then get down to microwave artwork with a practical example. The artwork from the practical example is taken through patterning, etching and so on looking at different substrate types. Then the matter of making the design actually work is described: bonding, packaging etc. The final two chapters are about connectors and such with a look at microstrip and stripline packaging. A thoroughly recommended hands-on book.

tire appearance but also because good solid coverage of analogue-digital design is hard to find. The real world is analogue and yet computers are mostly digital and the interface between these media is gaining in importance despite the practical difficulties of design and test. This book introduces the reader to philosophy of mixed circuit design and

oxervlews CMOS proce-,s ing, design methodologies,, layout techniques and compihttion, but the most interesting chapters are on interfacing to a foundry and a design example - a single chip telephone set ASIC. The latter is fully explained step by step through to functional test. Running over 40 pages complete with colour layouts and chip photos, the

book is worth having rot this alone. It's a pity the authors could not have included some kind of costing for this ASIC solution to their problem, even better to have it compared to other non-ASIC board solutions. However, I'm not surprised because such information is hard to find! Roy S-wedo
