Menzbership At the beginning of the Session, the membership of the Society slood all 2,343, but the figure decreased during the year to 2,295. The total is made up by 10 Ho!lorary Fellows, 2,107 subscribing fellows and associates, and 178 fully paid up life members.

Dr. E. H+~ghes The Council record with deep regret the death during the Session of Dr. E. Hughes, tile President for the Session 1962-63.

Third Anmml Symposhm~ The Society's third Annual Symposiuna was held at the Russell Hotel, London, W.C.I., on Friday, 21st February, 1964. The theme of the Symposium was "Environment, Health and Wclfarc--a Conlinuing Challenge". After the inaugural address by' tile President. Dr. H. M. Millar spoke on "Current Problems" in ",vhich he dealt with. it~z,, alia, housing problems of both over occupation and under occupation, air pollution. and sanitary conditions at lay-bys on nlain roads, l)r. J. W. B. Douglas followed with a paper on "'Povcrly and Health in the \Vclfiu'e State". The Chairman of the afternoon session was Professor A. A. Moncrieff. Dr. Nora 1. Wattle spoke on "'The Impact of Changing Social and Environmental Factors on Family I_ife, Mother and Child". Dr. J. 1-1. Weir on "'Problems of Mulliple Occupation" with special ref\'rence to parts of the Royal Borough of Kensington. alld Dr. J. B. Meredilh Davies on "F'roblems o f a Shifting Population". in relation to the new towns"of Kirkby and Harlow. Manv Fellows joined in 1]le discusbions, and the Symposiunl gave Illally opportunities for informal contact among tile 200 or so Fellows who attended from all paris of the United Kingdom.

Chih! ltealth Course The Society, in association with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, inaugurated a six weeks' course for medical officers on Child Health and Development. The course, which was held at the Society's premises, was under the direction of Dr. Mary D. Sheridan, and started a day or two before the end of the Session. Thirty students attended. Annual Reception The Annual Reception was held at the Royal Society of Medicine on 1st November, 1963. Outside Bodies The relations of the Society in its many contacts with Government Departments and outside professional and other bodies remained cordial. General The Society initiated action or discussion, or gave opinions, on, inter alia, the following subjects : Congenital malformation at Birth Standard Co-operation Maternity Record Cards Consultation Record Cards for Children Whooping Cough Vaccination Pcrinatal Mortality Report Medical Services Review Committee (Porritt Report) Research Project on Hostels for the Mentally Ill Handicapped Children Detection of Diabetes. Research Grozq) The Sociely formed a Research Group during the Session, with Professor W. S. Wahon as President, and Dr. J. Maddison as Hon. Secretary. Sub-Committee on the D.P.tt. This Sub-Committee, under the chairmanship of Professor R. C. Wofinden, which had been in existence for over two years, completed its final Report during the Session. The Report has now been approved in principle by the Council.

Conclusion The Council in particular, and the Society in general, continue to be grateful to all Office Bearers of Branches and Groups, and also to those who devote so much of their time to attending meetings, through whose efforts the machinery of the Society is kept in motion, and interest in the Society's aims and objects is possible. The Council also wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the permanent staff at the Society's headquarters.
