US con rod pioneer heads down the business trail to a Chinese joint venture MICHIGAN-BASED powder-forged connecting rod pioneer Metaldyne has moved further into the heart of the AsiaPacific Region announcing that they have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Dongfeng Motor Co to explore a joint venture in China. The potential joint venture would focus on the manufacture and sales of powder metal-based products and assemblies for the local transportation market. Dongfeng Motor Co is itself a joint venture between Nissan Motor Co and Dongfeng Motor Corporation, one of China's leading automobile producers. With a combined investment of more than $2 billion, the joint venture produces cars, trucks. Minivans and

buses at three separate bases at Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, and Xiangfan and Shiyan, both in Hubei. Rumours of a move into China by a major US powder metal manufacturer have been an undercurrent in the industry for the past three months and the move represents the leading edge of a wave of renewed interest in doing business in China in the US PM industry. "Metaldyne is pleased to announce this relationship with Dongfeng because the potential joint venture would position Metaldyne to play a larger role as a systems and module supplier in the Asia Pacific region," said Scott Ferriman, senior vice president, Metaldyne Asia Pacific.

Achieving the quality management system registration means that Diamet Corporation of Columbus, Indiana, conforms to other quality standards in the international automotive industry. ISO/TS 16949 aligns with existing US (QS-9000), German (VDA6.1), French

(EAQF), and Italian (AVSQ) automotive quality systems standards. "The international business community views ISO/TS 16849 as the worldwide standard for quality management systems," said Larry Van Epps, executive vice president of Diamet, which also received the Environmental Management System ISO 14001 last year.

"We hope that the MOU with Dongfeng will be a catalyst for the Metaldyne footprint in China. Our manufacturing presence in Asia is a critical part of our growth strategy," added Tim Leuliette, Metaldyne's chairman, president and CEO. "This project between Metaldyne and Dongfeng will benefit both sides and will potentially lead to a win-win joint venture for powder metal-based products," said Weng Yunzhong, deputy executive general manager of the Dongfeng's Parts and Components business unit. Diamet was founded in 1989 by Mitsubishi Metal Corp. as a supplier of PM parts to the automotive industry. The company has 240 employees and a 144,000-square-foot plant on 40 acres. The Arburg subsidiary in Hong Kong remains responsible for Hong Kong and Guangdong Province. The new premises, only 15 minutes from Hong Qiao National Airport contain a demonstration room and training facilities as well as offices.
