...Continued from front page Middle East and North Africa countries is estimated to more than triple over the next 20–30 years,” said Yochai Gafni, business unit director for RO at DW&PS, a business unit of Dow. “To combat regional water scarcity challenges and address this growing resource demand, Jubail Operations will help deliver a robust local supply of cutting-edge technologies for municipal and industrial water applications.” Dow’s wholly owned Jubail Operations is located in Jubail Industrial City II within the Sadara Chemical Co complex, the joint venture developed by Dow and Saudi Aramco. The plant manufactures Filmtec RO elements for seawater and brackish water desalination and for the reuse of potable, non-potable and industrial water. “The Jubail Operations replicates and builds on the state-of-the-art production technology employed in Edina, Minnesota, USA, and adds a high technology investment to the Kingdom,” said Chuck Swartz, president for Dow in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. “It is also creating jobs for Saudi talents.” Dow’s investment in the DW&PS Jubail Operations complements its activities at the Dow Middle East Research and Development Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), where research on RO solutions in combination with ultrafiltration pretreatment for seawater desalination is taking place. Porvair opens new base in China
P
orvair Filtration Group has set up a new operational base in Xiaogan, in north-central Hubei Province, China, that will market and sell the company’s complete range of products. The Xiaogan facility, which has significant capacity for future expansion, will allow Porvair to directly service local needs in the region. The company says that it will introduce capabilities in response to market demand as its Asian presence grows, initially manufacturing filters for coal gasification. This is a significant international step for Porvair which has previously had operational bases only in the US, UK and Benelux region.
Porvair has been growing its business in Asia for many years and has built up a network of sales channels for industries such as water treatment, medical devices, chemical processing and energy. The company has worked on some of Asia’s largest gasification projects, providing char filtration systems to customers such as Posco in South Korea and Reliance Industries Ltd in India. Porvair expects to expand its interests longterm in water treatment, printing, polymer, and industrial processes. “This new facility will act as a focal point for all our interests in Asia and a platform for future growth of this important geographic segment,” said Porvair managing director Tom Liddell. “It will mean that our divisions based in the UK and US have direct sales channels and dedicated local support. This improved customer service will help convert new business and lead to sustainable growth of existing Asian accounts.” For further information, visit www.porvairfiltration.com
Evonik Industries expands membrane business
E
vonik Industries is planning to double the production capacity for its SEPURAN brand hollow-fibre membrane modules in Lenzing/ Schörfling, Austria. The gas separation modules that Evonik produces in Schörfling are primarily for the biogas market and for hydrogen and helium extraction. The new hollow fibre spinning plant will be dedicated to the production of membrane modules for gas separation particularly for nitrogen extraction. The nearby Lenzing plant manufactures polyimide, a high-performance polymer, which is spun and then further processed in Schörfling. The infrastructure in Lenzing will also be expanded. Evonik is making a mid double-digit million euro investment in the plant and its infrastructure. “The investment in Austria creates the basis for the further growth of our membrane business in the very attractive market for efficient gas separation. As a technology leader, we want to benefit in an aboveaverage way from the growth in the global gas separation market with our highly selective and productive membranes,” said Dr Ralph
