ARC adds to GDS
Hewlett-Packard single user workstation
Graphics productsfrom HP Hewlett-Packard has introduced several graphics products including a display controller, an accelerator and a monitor. These products plus a 32-bit HP 9000 Model 550 comprise a graphics system which Hewlett-Packard claim' i s suitable for engineering applications. The display controller provides CRT control, frame buffering and colour mapping. It stores data with four or eight planes of 1024 x 1024 bits for a colour palette of 16 or 256 colours from a possible 16 million. Its interface plugs directly into the memory processor bus of the Model 550 which allows the graphics subsystem to be memory mapped into the CPU's address space. This enables a data transfer rate of 2 Mbyte/s. The graphics accelerator includes hardware scan conversion and a transform engine which performs graphics functions such as 2D and 3D transformations, clipping and filling and perspective views. The 19 in colour monitor has a resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and is refreshed at 60 Hz noninterlaced. The system operates as a single user workstation but can be configured with multiple CPUs to support up to three display stations; HP describe this as a 'multi-seat' system. The graphics system supports ANVI L-4000, the mechanical engineering design and drafting package; PATRAN a general purpose graphics system and ANSYS a finite element program. The operating system is version 5.0 of HP-UX (which is based on UNIX). There is an ANSI standard library.

ARC has added a building services detailing system (BSDS) module to its general drafting system (GDS). It can be used to draw, view and coordinate the heating, ventilation, electrical and plumbing services associated with a building project. The system incorporates two libraries of commonly used symbols; one for symbols connected with mechanical, electrical and public health installations and a second for parameterized shapes for duct work. After a drawing is completed, BSDS can list the components used and automatically generate standard schedules and listings showing, for example, numbers of ducts by depth, width and length or cables by conductor size, voltage and current. The work of one detailer can be merged with another, for example a mechanical engineer can check that his work on an installation does not clash with that of the electrical engineer. Aydin's Tribune The 2010 Tribune graphics terminal from Aydin Controls is a high resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) device based on single board architecture. It features firmware emulation of the GKS standard. Aydin's 19 in colour monitor (with tilt and swivel) is fitted and the user interacts via keyboard or optional digitizer or trackerball. The 2010 Tribune offers a palette of 4096 colours and 256 Kbyte of local storage. It can be used as a standalone or host-interactive device and has graphics manipulation capabilities built in to the system. These include features such as local scaling, translation, rotation and programmable colour indexes. The Tribune is designed to be compatible with other members of the Aycon 2000 family of graphics systems. (Aydin Controls (UK) Ltd,
