Merck adds to pigment range Merck KGaA has introduced three new Miraval™ pigments - Magic Gold, Magic Copper and Magic Blue. The company says that they combine sparkling lustre with interesting light reflections in the colours of the rainbow. The pigment series was launched last year through the silver-white pigment Miraval™ Magic White.

According to Merck, Miraval 5420 Magic Gold demonstrates golden reflections with coloured highlights. Miraval 5421 Magic Copper is said to be a pigment with fascinating colour and glitter effects. Depending on the incidence of light and angle of observation, the pigment glitters in golden, red or pink tones. Miraval 5424 Magic Blue has a deep blue interference colour, which is

accented by a pink coloured glitter effect. The company adds that the pigment's special characteristic is that it offers unusual colour depth from which the sparkling glitter effects emerge. The Miraval effect pigment range has been developed on borosilicate flakes. The company adds that they can offer brilliant colourful glitter and bold lustre to a number of

applications, including plastics. Particularly relevant application areas include cosmetic packaging, sporting goods and a number of high-value products. The effects can be achieved at low concentrations, says Merck, providing a good cost/benefit balance. Contact: Merck KGaA Tel: +49 6151 72 2697 Website: www.merck.de

Engineered lubricants optimize WPC processing Struktol Company of America has developed a full line of lubricant packages for use with wood-plastic composites. The company says that Struktol® TPW has been developed as polymer-specific process additives and includes products for polyolefin-, styrenic- and PVC-wood composites. The additives increase output rates, improve colour dispersion,

reduce edge tearing and improve overall product performance. The series includes Struktol TPW 104, which is designed for use in polyolefin compounds and provides significant processing improvement compared with conventional lubrication systems. Struktol TPW 012 is said to be a combination of internal and external lubricants

that can provide optimum fusion characteristics, reduced processing torque and higher output rates compared with conventional PVC lubricants. The company adds that Struktol TPW 113 has been designed for use in polyolefinwood composites specifically where the formulation contains reactive chemical coupling agents to provide physical

property improvements. Developed as a general-purpose lubricant blend to improve pigment and filler dispersion as well as eliminating edge tearing, Struktol TPW 101 can be used in polyolefin and styrenic compounds. Contact: Struktol Company of America Tel: +1 330 928 5188 Website: www.struktol.com

RTP Company introduces PEEK long fibre compounds Speciality compounder RTP Company has expanded its long fibre product line with Victrex® PEEK™ (Polyetheretherketone). The company says that these RTP 2200 Series PEEK long fibre compounds significantly improve impact strength when compared to conventional short fibre PEEK materials, making them ideal for metal replacement applications. According to RTP Company, the new compounds are superior to short fibre products

because the longer fibres mechanically interlock, which typically reduce warpage and shrinkage and absorb higher stress levels. They also offer several important additional advantages, including a significant increase in notched Izod impact. RTP Company says that recent tests prove that its long fibre PEEK 30% glass-filled compounds have more than twice the impact strength of short fibre PEEK 30% glassfilled compounds. Long fibre

PEEK containing 40% and 50% long glass fibre also demonstrated dramatic increases over their short glass fibre counterparts. Other expected benefits include improved long-term creep and fatigue and better dimensional stability especially at elevated temperatures. The company adds that long fibre compounds are ideal metal replacement materials. They offer many benefits including weight reduction, increased throughput, part consolidation,

reduction of secondary processing, and improved chemical resistance. PEEK long fibre compounds are suitable for metal replacement applications in the compressor and pump markets where excellent chemical resistance, high mechanical properties, elevated temperatures, and outstanding wear resistance are required.
