AVK unveils its 2007 Innovation Awards BMW WON the Best Product of the Year in this year's AVK Innovation Awards for its development of a self-supporting composite rear end for the BMW HP2 Sport motorcycle. The German Federation of Reinforced Plastics (AVK) presented the awards as part of its annual conference, which was held in Stuttgart last month, just prior to the Composites Europe tradeshow. The AquaCell® process developed by Möller Tech GmbH was the winner of Best Process of the Year. This allows the production of foamed plastic components on conventional injection moulding machines using water as a blowing agent. Caverion GmbH won the Environment prize for an energy-efficient

process for cleaning exhaust air, while the University prize went to the University of Erlangen/ Nürnberg for its In-MouldForming (IMF) technique for manufacture of a hybrid steering column connection. The awards were presented during Composites Night, a networking event organised by AVK and the organiser of Composites Europe, Reed Exhibitions, and its partners the European Composites Industry Association (EuCIA) and Reinforced Plastics magazine. This event also saw the presentation of the Composites Pioneer Award to Richard Eppler and Rudolf Lindner for their achievements in the composites sector. 50 years ago on the 27 November 1957, the FS 24 Phoenix reinforced plastic glider

BMW won an award for the development of a composite rear end for the HP2 Sport motorbike.

took off from Schwaighofen, Germany. “We were fascinated by this material, which permitted the achievement of what had previously been a virtually impossible to achieve aerodynamic shape and surface finish as well as having almost sensational mechanical strength

properties,” says Eppler, who, along with designer Hermann Nägele, worked for two years on the project. Mechanic and pilot Lindner joined the project in the second year. Composites Europe; www.composites-europe.com AVK; www.avk-frankfurt.de
