In brief Water treatment specialist, Degremont S.A, a subsidiary of SUEZ Environment, has appointed Shyam Bhan as its CEO of North America. Bhan will manage four of the providers and manufacturers of water and wastewater equipment in North America, including Infilco Degremont Inc and Ozonia North America in the United States, and Anderson Water Systems and Degremont Ltd in Canada, which have been recently unified under the Degremont Technologies (SUEZ) banner. “The new brand affords us the opportunity to offer a vast network of equipments and services to the municipal, industrial and leisure markets,” said Bhan. He joined the Degremont Group 10 years ago and worked as MD of Degremont India and, later, of Degremont UK. www.degremont.com A pharmaceutical company has chosen Siemens Water Technologies to supply a USP (United States Pharmacopoeia) purified water system upgrade for its biotechnology laboratory in Puerto Rico. The company is adding an additional system to the two systems already supplied by Siemens in 2003. The US$1.1 million project will begin operation in April 2007. The system upgrade will increase the total flow rate capacity from 80 gallons per minute (18 m3/hr) to 150 gallons per minute (34 m3/hr), and is designed to be integrated into the existing system. “Siemens will design, install and start up the system,” says Jeff Okun, responsible for biopharmaceutical solutions at Siemens Water Technologies. “We will also conduct a factory acceptance test on the equipment at our Colorado Springs, Colorado, facility, which will help the customer to greatly speed up the validation process for the new system.” www.siemens.com

DuPont technologies win innovation achievement awards Two of the latest technologies from DuPont, one based on bio-based technology and the other based on nanofibre science – DuPont Sorona polymer and DuPont Hybrid Membrane Technology (HMT) respectively – have received IDEA Achievement Awards, presented at IDEA07, the International Engineered Fabrics Conference and Expo.
using a proprietary new spinning process, and incorporates nanofibre media that contain continuous polymeric filaments with a diameter between 100 nanometers and one micron.
DuPont Sorona is the first biobased, renewably sourced polymer from DuPont and contains 37% renewably sourced materials derived from corn. DuPont scientists developed a way to make Bio-PDO, the key Sorona ingredient, from corn using a new biological process.
“We believe that nanofibre science that results in developments such as HMT will play a key role in bridging performance gaps of traditional materials, and will lead to advances such as improved air quality, lower energy costs and extended filter life,” said Matthew Trerotola, vice president and general manager, DuPont Nonwovens. “There are many significant applications we are exploring for this exciting new innovation.”

Pall files new lawsuit against Entegris Pall Corp has filed a patent infringement action against Entegris Inc, alleging that the Entegris Impact® filter cartridge line infringes four Pall patents: U.S Patent Nos. 5,543,047, 5,690,765, 6,113,784, and 7,195,122. Specifically, the Entegris Impact 2 and Impact Plus point-of-use photoresist filters are in question, with Pall contending that they infringe a patent issued to Pall on March 27, 2007, as well as three older patents. The suit seeks compensatory damages and a permanent injunction precluding Entegris from selling the infringing products. The patents in question involve Pall’s Ultipleat® laid-over pleat filter pack and the EZD® low hold-up volume filter capsule. The laid-over pleat design that defines the Ultipleat filter line allows more filter material to be packed into a smaller envelope, while the EZD capsule line incorporates an internal configuration which offers several
advantages, including minimising process fluid loss. Entegris has countered the action with a response indicating that the lawsuit has no merit. “As our customers can attest, innovation is at the core of our leadership in the market. Entegris takes great pains to respect the intellectual property of others and expects its competitors to do the same,” said Peter Walcott, Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Pall’s separate action against Entegris, filed in 2005, involving Entegris Quickchange® and Waferguard® products, is still ongoing. This is the fifth legal action between Entegris and Pall alleging infringement of various patents, including three actions initiated by Entegris or its predecessor in March 2003, April 2006 and August 2006 and one prior action initiated by Pall in December 2005. www.pall.com www.entegris.com
produced using renewable feedstocks in a variety of market and industry segments,” added Peter Hemken, vice president and general manager – DuPont Bio-Based Materials. “Work is currently under way to introduce additional high performance, renewably sourced materials that will further reduce our dependency on petrochemicals.” The awards, which are cosponsored by the Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) and Nonwovens Industry magazine, honour new product and technical developments in five categories: roll goods, short-life end product, long-life end product, raw materials and machinery/ equipment. www.dupont.com
