is not a synergist for halogen. When used at low levels in place of antimony oxide in flexible PVC, it disperses well and does not ~ompromiae PVC’s heat stability. In hydrocarbon polymers, selfextinguishing hehaviour is found when at least 35 pbr of melamine amyl phosphate are used and non-burning behaviour is seen at 75 phr. Synergism with alumina t&hydrate was examined by adding the salts to a low viscosity, semicrystalline EPDM elastomer. The result was a reduction in the amount of ATH required to maintain the polymers previous flame-retardsncy characteristics. According to Synthetic Products, 15-20 phr of melamine amyl phosphate were able to replace 50 phr of ATE& eliminating the lose of physical properties sometimes associated with the use of ATH.

Improving the heat stability of organic pigments

Many of the problems with these pigments have already heen eliminated by technology developed in the lfI6O’s that encapsulates the pigmenta in silica - increasing their heat stability in many cases to almost 6OOOF. However, there are still some processing system8 today, especially those for ADS, that demand higher temperatures than even the encapsulated pigments can withstand. Research by Cookson in the US has resulted in a further loOoF being added to the heat stability of both silica-encapsulated and non-encapsulated chrome yellow and molybdate orange pigments. This, in turn, offers processors an alternative to cadmium-based pigments to colour their highperformance polymers. The improved encaps~a~d pigments work exIremely well in PDT, one of the most popular of the growing line of highperformance automotive plastics. However, a lo-30% increase in the loading of the encapsulated pigments was necessary to achieve the strength and opacity of the original formulations. Besides PEW, the improved pigments have been found to work well in ADS, PE, nylon 6 and liquid crystal polymer. PZast.
