Agri-Tech Industries Inc., in the U.S. has been licensed to use processes for making biodegradable plastic developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The firm plans to have a fast degrading cornstarch-plastic resin for commercial use within a year.
BIODEGRADABLE PLASTICS - 2
British Sugar, of Peterborough (U.K.), is investigating ways of exploiting the use of sugar as a fermentable substrate for use in biodegradable plastics and polymer bulking agents. The company is planning a major campaign to accelerate profit growth into the 1990's, and may expand into packaging material production. It is interested in the research underway at Marlborough Biopolymers, of Hutton Rudby, part of the I.C.I. group. There a basic sugar, meritose, is used to produce Biopol biodegradable plastic.
COLOURANTS PLANT
Harshaw/Filtrol is to open a colourant plant in Ohio primarily for vinyl building products, One of the pigments to be produced there is an inorganic black that is highly reflective to infrared radiation.

Ferro Normandy Plastics Ltd., in the U,K. is now able to offer a wider selection of masterbatch products for PET bottle manufacturers. It can supply, from T-day stocking, a minimum of 20 colours on request; U.K. packaging producers are already being supplied. The introduction from Ferro Normandy follows market requests for colours other than standard greens and browns. Current trends indicate, also, that the more solid colours, for example, white, blue and white/blue, are gaining in popularity in PET applications and Ferro Normandy intends to incorporate such shades into its standard range for delivery ex-stock, over the next six months.

Masterbatches containing such property enhancing additives as slip agents, impact modifiers, UV stabilizers and process aids are the province of Additive Polymers. The company specialises in made to order formulations for specific purposes, and is able to provide small quantities.
