Biographical Notes GERTRUDE HESS

Author of: Impressions of Mental Health Service Delivery Systems in Finland, Poland, Soviet Russia and Czechoslovakia

Miss Hess graduated from the Mt. Sinai School of Nursing in New York, earned her B.Sc. degree at New York University and her M.P.H. at the School of Public Health at Michigan University; in addition, she had post master’s education in Psychiatric Nursing and Community Mental Health at the University of California. She has taught at the University of Chicago and has had staff and administrative experience in both private and tax supported agencies in New York State, in Illinois and in California. Until recently she was Co-director, Community Mental Health Program, San Francisco Medical Center, University of California, San Francisco, Her present appointment is Associate Professor of Nursing in the Department of Public Health Nursing, College of Nursing, University of Illinois, Chicago. Miss Hess has travelled in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East to observe Public Health and Mental Health delivery systems. KAREN F, PFUDHAM

Graduated from University OF Wisconsin (Madison), with a major in Public Health nursing. Master’s degree, in pediatric nursing, University of Wisconsin (Madison). Staff nurse, Madison Department of Public Health; instructor of pediatric nursing (undergraduate program) at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). At present a doctoral student in the School of Education in that University, with a major in instruction. Special interest in applying instructional theory and research methods to the area of nursing problems in relationship to instruction of the patient and his family for self-care and health maintenance. Dr. Feldman’s educational background includes degrees in accounting and psychology and a doctorate in Public Administration. He is serving as Associate Director for Community Mental Health Services, Division of Mental Health Service Programs, National Institute of Mental Health. Particularly interested in the administration of health programs, Dr. Feldman has previously served as the executive director of several psychiatric clinics. 221 A

Dr. Goldstein, a psychologist with NIMH, received his doctorate from the University of Massachusetts. He has done post-doctoral study in community mental health at the Laboratory of Community Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School. He is currently Coordinator, Community Mental Health Programs in the Services Development Branch and has previously served as Special Assistant to the Director, NIMH.

Did post-basic and graduate work at the University of Toronto, University of British Columbia and the University of San Francisco, California. Appointed Director of Nursing at McMaster University Medical Centre in January, 1968 and Associate Professor, McMaster University School of Nursing. Was with the World Health Organization as a nurse educator for eight years, first in Singapore and later in Malaya. Member of Canadian Nurses’ Association Committee on Nursing Service. Recently appointed a member of the Advisory Board of the Medical Post, a bi-weekly newspaper for the Canadian medical profession.
