NEWS to ensure microbiological compliance. The system was factory tested and provided with a full validation pack to minimise site installation time. A five-year AQUAservice Diamond, 24-hour response-service contract covers all four of the Ionpro LX water treatment plants on the site. In addition to normal servicing and planned maintenance, the contract includes emergency breakdown cover, parts and consumables, media/membrane replacement, regular calibration and an in-depth annual report for regulatory compliance. PWN Technologies expands its R&D facility
P
WN Technologies of Velserbroek, The Netherlands, which specialises in water-treatment technology, says that its enlarged research and development facility is one of the largest wet laboratories in the world. The facility, which still has to be officially opened, offers a 1000-m2 pilot laboratory and 350 m2 of office space. The company says the additional space is very much needed as the R&D programme for 2013 is fully booked. During 2013 the research programme contains optimisation studies and work that aims to improve the sustainability of water treatment even further. The company says the final goal is to arrive at a surface-water treatment technology that produces high-quality water, with almost no waste (zero liquid discharge) and at the lowest possible energy demand (direct and indirect). The new pilot facility houses more than 20 pilot units, a small analytical laboratory and workshop. The first pilot facility was built in 1968, while the current one was constructed in 1992. Involvement in a growing number of projects had spatial implications for the firm’s R&D department. The pilot facility became too small. So much so that some of the piloting work had to be done outside in containers. This is no longer necessary now that the space has nearly doubled. ‘We are operating in a growing market. But still its takes bravery and guts to keep investing in facilities such as these and in applied research,’ commented Gilbert Galjaard, Director R&D, PWN Technologies. ‘This new facility symbolises the phase where we are in as a company. We can be proud of, and take pride in, what we have accomplished so far.’ 6

Xylem announces expansion plans for the Middle East
U
S-based water technology company Xylem Inc has announced that it is expanding its presence in the Middle East by opening a new office in Saudi Arabia in the coming months, and up to three additional offices in other key regional markets later this year. The company already has a presence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Lebanon. It says this latest expansion supports its growth in this area resulting from the development of its water and wastewater treatment offering to address pressing reuse and desalination challenges. It is also expanding its dewatering capabilities in the region. Xylem used the International Water Summit, which was held recently in Abu Dhabi, UAE, to exhibit a broad portfolio of water transport, treatment and testing technologies, and dewatering systems. ‘In the last year, we increased our capabilities in the Middle East so that we can provide what we call ‘‘integrated treatment solutions’’,’ said Mike Kuchenbrod, President, Xylem Water Solutions. ‘What this means is that we can help customers achieve optimum wastewater treatment system performance by combining our extensive process knowledge and controls capability with the world-class, biological treatment, filtration and disinfection technologies in our portfolio.’ Kuchenbrod continued: ‘We have also expanded our dewatering or water removal capabilities in the region, and now offer a rental fleet that includes two leading drainage pump brands – Flygt and Godwin – together with Xylem services to provide complete dewatering systems and products in the Middle East.’ Xylem is based in White Plains, New York. In 2011 it posted revenues of $3.8 billion and had 12 500 employees worldwide. In 2012 the company appeared on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index for advancing sustainable business practices and technologies worldwide.

Bioline launches nucleic acid purification kits
B
ioline Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Meridian Bioscience Inc, has released the Isolate II range of nucleic acid purification kits. Based on filter membrane spin column technology with simple bind-wash-elute steps, these kits are designed for fast and efficient isolation of DNA or RNA from a wide range of biological materials, says Bioline. According to the firm, by using Isolate II kits, researchers can expect higher yields, higher purity and greater reproducibility, compared with previous generation nucleic acid purification kits. Marco Calzavara, President, Bioline, commented: ‘With Isolate II nucleic acid purification kits, researchers can now quickly achieve the purity and yield necessary for the high-performance polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique and real-time PCR experiments. This makes it the perfect complement to our widely used PCR reagents.’ Richard Eberly, President, Meridian Life Science Inc, added: ‘We are delighted to release the next generation of nucleic acid purification kits – Isolate II – to build on the rapidly expanding portfolio of highly specialised molecular biology reagents from Bioline.’ Ten new DNA and RNA Isolate II kits are now available and feature both DNA and RNA extraction components for a wide range of starting samples and tissues types. Meridian Bioscience is an integrated life science company that develops, manufactures, markets and distributes a broad range of diagnostic test kits, purified reagents and related products.
