HI LAUNCHES PUMPS SYSTEMS MATTER WEBSITE The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has launched a new website,www.PumpSystemsMatt er.org, devoted to the Pump Systems Matter national educational initiative. Pump Systems Matter aims to lower energy needs in North America while improving the bottom-line profitability of businesses by providing pump users with strategic, broadbased energy management and performance optimisation solutions. The www.PumpSystems Matter.org website provides users with the educational resources needed to get started with optimising pumping systems. Users can also download Pump System Improvement Modeling, a free educational software tool to help evaluate the overall design of complex pumping systems. Additionally, visitors can download case studies, white papers and energy-savings tip sheets to improve bottom line savings and corporate profitability. Guidelines, standards and training resources are also available. The HI believes that the optimisation of pumping

According to the US Department of Energy, pumping systems account for nearly 25% of industrial electrical energy demand and range up to 50% of the energy usage in certain industrial plant operations. WOOD GROUP ESP OPENS NEW CANADIAN FACILITY Wood Group ESP (Canada) Ltd has opened a new 30 000 sq ft facility in Leduc,
Alberta, Canada to increase the business’s manufacturing capabilities and service provided to WGESP’s customers in Canada. The new facility is centrally located in the Western Canadian sedimentary basin, and will function as a manufacturing and service centre for electric submersible pumps. WGESP will support the wide range of markets in the sedimentary basin, including but not limited to conventional and heavy oil, coal bed methane, oil sands and natural gas. “We are excited to open this new facility and become a stronger presence in the Canadian oil and gas market,” said Ron Wing, WGESP’s Canadian region manager. “Our facility’s central location in Alberta and strong staff will help to increase our capabilities and market share in Canada.”
BLACKMER EUROPE CELEBRATES CENTENARY Blackmer Europe has received the Century Recognition Award of Excellence from parent company Dover Corp to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary. Mouvex, established in 1906, was acquired by Dover in 1997 and consolidated under Blackmer to serve as its European base of operation. IN BRIEF • Westport Innovations Inc, a gaseous-fuelled engine and power technologies specialist, and Cryostar SAS, a manufacturer of cryogenic pumps, have completed a licence and supply agreement for the manufacture and supply of cryogenic liquid natural gas (LNG) fuel pumps, based on Westport’s cryogenic technology. Westport will license its LNG pump technology on an exclusive basis to Cryostar for use in the heavy-duty automotive market, and has agreed to source any HPDI LNG fuel pumps it requires for the heavy duty automotive market from Cryostar. Cryostar will also have the right to manufacture and sell pumps incorporating Westport’s LNG pump technology, to other customers. • Allweiler AG is organising a pump convention at its Radolfzell, Germany facility on 12 October 2006. The theme is the economical use of pumps and reducing the total cost of ownership. The opening talk will be given by Prof Dr Ing D-H Hellmann from Kaiserslautern Technical University, followed by specialist talks on reducing total costs taking account of construction methods, material and pump system selection, service and maintenance concepts. FLOWSERVE OPENS SUZHOU, CHINA FACILITY Flowserve Corp has formally opened its new pump, valve and seal manufacturing facility in Suzhou, China with a dedication ceremony. The state-of-the-art facility will support Flowserve’s existing China operations in Beijing, Shanghai, Dalian and Shenzhen by providing pumps, valves, seals and services to the oil and gas, power, chemical processing and water sectors as well as other industries. This new 15 000 m2 facility, located in the Suzhou Industrial Park, 100 kms outside Shanghai, will begin full manufacturing operations in the first quarter of 2007. Flowserve’s goal for the remainder of 2006 is to complete the interior buildout of the facility and to train new employees on Flowserve’s manufacturing and continuous improvement processes. Flowserve plans to manufacture several of its pump, valve and seal product lines for the domestic and export markets as well as have engineering, assembly and test capabilities on-site. “China and the AsiaPacific region continue to be key drivers of our global growth as a company,” said

Flowserve president and chief executive officer Lewis Kling. “We are very excited about this significant addition to our already existing footprint in China. ALLWEILER: SUCCESSFUL 2005, CLEAR GROWTH IN H1 2006 Allweiler closed 2005 with total orders up 12% to 174 million, and turnover up 8% to 156 million on 2004 levels. The Radolfzell headquartered screw and centrifugal pump division also achieved a turnover of more than 100 million for the first time in 2005. During the first six months of 2006, total order value again increased by a two-digit figure on the previous year. Allweiler expects particularly high demand in Asia, Eastern Europe and in the
Middle East in 2006, especially in the marine and power generation sectors.
HAMWORTHY ‘PLEASED WITH PROGRESS’ The single largest contributor to Hamworthy plc’s first quarter order intake was pump systems. This business maintained its market lead in deepwell pumps for LPG carriers and notable orders included pump room systems for very large crude carriers (VLCCs) and engine room pumps for the offshore market. Group order intake for the quarter to 30 June 2006 was £46 million and the outstanding order book at that date rose to £212 million from £207 million at 31 March 2006. Speaking at the company’s recent annual general meeting, Hamworthy nonexecutive chairman Gordon Page said that Hamworthy has continued to make excellent progress with demand for the group’s products remaining strong. “We are pleased with progress across all product groups consistent with our policy of growing a balanced product portfolio serving several market sectors. Against this positive background the company looks forward with confidence.”
CARDO MAKES AUSTRALIAN ACQUISITION Cardo has acquired the operations of the Australian company Style Industries. With annual sales of approximately SKr45 million and almost 30 employees, Style Industries sells and services pumps and peripheral equipment for water treatment and wastewater applications. The comapny is based in Brisbane in southeastern Australia.
