All Aboard! The first APhA Annual
Meeting ever held on the West Coast was 100 years ago. Delegates from the East gathered in St. Louis and boarded the Union Pacific Railway for a 10-day trip to California via Denver where they spent a couple of days being entertained by the pharmacists of Colorado. Then it was off to San Francisco on the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. It was June 22, 1889, when most APhA delegates arrived in San Francisco. Many stayed at the Palace Hotel in one of its 755 sleeping rooms, each with a bath. For those who wanted less expensive accommodations than the $3.50-per-night rooms at the Palace, there was the Grand Hotel, connected to the Palace by a 70-foot bridge, where sleeping rooms were $1 per night. At 3:00 pm on Monday, June 24, the delegates gathered in the Eureka Room of the Odd Fellows Hall to receive greetings from San Francisco Mayor Pond as well as from California Pharmaceutical Society President Samuel Melvin. This opening session of the 37th Annual Meeting was followed by a reception and concert at the Palace Hotel. (No meeting was held in 1861 or in 1941.) At the second session it was reported that the Association had 1,373 members "in good standing," and that the Association had $12,021.76 in "invested funds" and $4,265.94 "cash on hand." At subsequent sessions the delegates: • Supported a bill in the U.S. Congress to "improve the condition of apothecaries in the U.S.

• Resolved to "practice rigid economy" so that "the current expenses of the Association shall not exceed the income." American Pharmacy, Vol. NS29, No.4 April 1989/273

The Section on Commercial Interests discussed the removal of the tax on alcohol, and a "Rebate" plan to combat "price cutting." The section resolved to "seek cooperation in modifying the 'Rebate' plan to prevent the sale of proprietary goods at less than regular retail prices."
The Section on Pharmaceutical Legislation called for the "interchange of state pharmacy certificates," and reviewed new phannacy laws in Florida, Louisiana, and New York. The Section on Scientific Papers heard lectures on such subjects as "Phannacopeial Nomenclature," "Patent and Trademark Laws," and "Plants Indigenous to California." Meanwhile, the women in attendance were escorted through Chinatown, and took a carriage ride through Golden Gate Park to Cliff House and Seal Rocks. Other social activities for all delegates included "dancing in the parlors of the Palace Hotel until midnight"; an "elegantly: decorated banquet"; an excursion

around San Francisco Bay aboard the steamer James M. Donahue; and a carriage trip to Oakland. Before most delegates departed for their return home, they took various extended excursions. One group made a 4-day stagecoach trip to Yosemite to see "its towering rocks and grand waterfalls," and "the big trees in Mariposa grove." Another group traveled on to Mount Shasta "reached by rail in a day's t rip from San Francisco," and continued on home via Portland and Tacoma on the Northern Pacific Railroad. returning home, "some having journeyed over 8,800 miles by railroad and about 300 miles by stage coach." APhA Permanent Secretary John M. Maisch concluded, "It was a memorable trip for each one." And this was the way it was 100 years ago at the first APhA Annual Meeting held in California. Something to behold as we assemble for the 1989 APhA Annual Meeting in California - a century later! ®
