NEWS PROFILES FOR 1992 PRESIDENT

Professor E B Gareth Jones BSc, MSc, PhD, DSc, FLS, CIBiol is Professor of Microbiology and Director of Research in the School of Biological Sciences, Portsmouth Polytechnic, since 1980. Early mycological training was with Dr Irene M Wilson and a research MSc, carried out at Portsmouth. This was followed by a PhD at Leeds University. In 1963, he moved to Portsmouth College of Technology (later Portsmouth Polytechnic) as Lecturer in mycology and phycology and was the first Reader in a Polytechnic (1968) and one of the first professors at Portsmouth (1980). An all-round microbiologist as he has worked with bacteria, microalgae, protozoa and fungi; considering it important to study all groups when investigating particular habitats. His research interests include taxonomy, physiology and ecology of marine fungi, ultrastructure, adhesion in freshwater and marine fungi, microbial fouling of structures in the sea, metabolites from marine fungi and ecology of larger seaweeds. Society positions held include: BMS Council (1969-71); BMS Vice-President (1986); Council of Biodeterioration Society (1976-79); Editorial Board of Botanica Marina and International Biodeterioration Bulletin. He has served on the OECD Committee of the preservation of materials in the marine environment (later an independent group), IRG, IBRG; and has organized the 4th International Marine Symposium, Portsmouth (Secretary, 1985); President of the 1st International Symposium on the Microbial Ecology of the Mediterranean Sea (1987); Scientific Director of 1st and 2nd International Workshop in Marine Biotechnology (1985; 1990). He has served on the Advisory Committee on Pesticides for over 16 years (1976-92). He has travelled widely to undertake and encourage marine mycological and microbiological research; in particular Kuwait, Italy, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He has authored or co-authored some 180 papers, and edited three volumes: Marine Borers, Fungi and Fouling Organisms of Wood (1971); Recent Advances in Aquatic Mycology (1976); and Aspects of Marine Microbiology (1988).

VICE-PRESIDENTS Dr Juliet C Frankland PhD, FLS obtained a First Class Hons Degree in Botany at Royal Holloway College, University of London, a college noted for its women mycologists, including three BMS Presidents. Her PhD research on the seral succession of sand-dune fungi was the start of her special interest in the ecology of soil fungi. Her first post was non-mycological as a soil scientist with

the Nature Conservancy at Merlewood Research Station in the Lake District. After three years she transferred to its small microflora grou p as Senior Scientific Officer. Resigning , on marriage in 1959, she has continued her research part-time , working first on fungal decomposition of bracken and later, as a participant in the International Biological Programme , on the decomposition of forest litter, including the autecology of Mycena galopus. After reorganisation of the Conservancy, she became a contract researcher with the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology asa project leader and PhD supervisor. Several NERC-CASE awards have led to close collaboration with university researchers, including Prof T R G Gra y (production of monoclonal antibodies for detecting M. galopus in the field), Prof J B Whittaker (fungal/faunal interactions), and Dr L Boddy (effects of pollutants on decomposition) . Mycorrhizas were the subject of another project. She has participated in several international conferences and published in ecological and mycological journals. She is also on the Editorial Board of FEMS Microbiology Ecology and has co-edited two BMS Symposium Volumes, including Decomposer Basidiomycetes. Society positions held include: Member of Council (1980-82) and the Ecology SIC (1978-83). She is now Secretary of the Ecology & Environmental Mycology SIC. Dr A JKathuhutheen BSc, PhD, DSc , CBiol, MIBiol obtained his first degree , graduating with Class I Honours in Botany, in 1974 from the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He obtained his PhD from Aston University in 1977 under the supervision of Prof G J F Pugh . He joined the Department of Botany , Univ Malaya as a Lecturer in Mycology in 1977 and , in 1984 , was promoted to Associate Professor. Research interests include the taxonomy of tropical h yphomycetes , ecology of tropical fungal communities , bioconversion of ligno-cellulosic wastes by fungi, and the response of fungi to fungicides . He has published over 100 papers and supervised higher degree students on these subjects . To date, h e has described more than 70 new hyphomycetes taxa , particularly from plant litter submerged in tropical freshwater streams . Over the last 14 years, he has held several positions in the Univ Malaya, including Deputy Dean of Science and Institute of Advanced Studies and is currently Head of the Department of Botany. As a member of the University of Malaya Senate for almost ten years, he has sat on a number of Senate Committees. He has served as President, Malaysian Society for Microbiology; Vice-President, Malaysian Society for Applied Biology and as Chairman, Editorial Board of the Mala ysian Journal of Science. He has been consultant to sev eral Malaysian industries , including ICI Paints (Malaysia Co Ltd) . A Member of BMS since 1976 , he was elected in January 1991 to the Editorial Board of My cological Research . On 12 August 1991, he was awarded the degree of DSc by Aston University.
