'Fungus Foray' v 'Field Excursion ' A recent discussion on Council ce ntre s around a suggestion to replace the term 'fungu s foray' with 'field ex cursio n' . Som e me mbers believed this would present a mor e professio nal and scientific image of the Soci ety to out side negotiating bodies. Th e term 'fu ngus fo ray' has been used by th e Societ y, and its predecessors, the Woolhope Naturalist s' Field Club and the Yorkshire Naturalists Un ion , sinc e 1867, and has since been adopted by every natural history societ y, both at home and abroad. Council would welcome yo ur views on the proposed ch an ge to 'fie ld excursio n ', so pl ease let the Gen er al Secretar y have you r thou ghts, in order th at a decision ca n be made befo re the publicati on of the 1989 p rog ram me . Se ts of fou r colour transparencies de pic ting th e ac ti viti es of the BMS a re now availab le. Fr om 1988, th e Soc iet y 's representat ive o n th e British National Committee for Mi crobi ology w ill be the Pre sid ent, John Peberdy. Genetics, Molecular Biology & Evolution SIC The adve nt of re combinant DNA technology ha s gr eatly in creased the sc ope of b iotechnology by providing no vel ways of improving tr ad itional processes b y ope ning the wa y to totally novel products. Initially the hosts w ere bacteria but recently there has been an increasing interest in the use of yeasts and filamentous fungi (see J van Brunt, Biotechn ology 4: 1057, 1986) . Fungi are able to c arr y out post-translational mod ifications of prot eins and to secrete large qu antities of protei ns into the c ult ur e medium . Th e co rnm ercia] potential is stimulating research o n the mol ecular geneti cs of fungi and to en sure that th ese ex citing new developments are
reflected in the So ci et y's acti vities, GEMSIC has recruited a new member to represent th is field - Dr Jill Ogden (Delta Biotechnology Ltd , Nottingham). Her current research concerns the manipulation of filamentous fungi for the production of therapeutic proteins. Prior to this , sh e w o r ked on the ge netic s of resistance to antifungal compounds in Neu ro spora crassa, the co ntr ol of the cell cycle in Schizosaccharomyces pomb e, and gene expressi on in Saccharomyces cerv isiae. Pathogens & Mutualistics Interactions SIC In September, the SIC expects to pla y an im po rtan t role in th e symposium of 'Biotechno logy of Fungi for Improving Plant Growth ', which will include a day session in 'Inoculum Potential'. Looking ahead to 1989, plans are well advanced for the Berkeley Centenary Meeting on Phytoph thora, which will be held at Trinity College, Dublin, in conjunction with the British and Irish Societies for Plant Pathology.
