OisploLJS news market w h e r e manufacturers have b e e n p e r c e i v e d as expensive and somewhat remote from their customers'. Arrangements with major manufacturers throughout the world underline Legend's philosophy of aiding the customer to achieve what it wants from a display, and to have access to recent innovations within the L C D market. Typical design and proto-

typing costs range from £1 500 to around £3 000 for more complex designs involving interactive LCDs. Customization techniques include the use of transparent overlay switch m e m b r a n e touch panels, as well as a range of electroluminescent backlights with segmentation options. In addition to pins, connection options include the use of silicon

elastomers and automated heat seal systems for mass terminations. L e g e n d also offers access to a wide range of custom ICs, semicustom ICs and standard logic circuits for either conventional or SMT tecludques, to assist miniaturization requirements. Legend Custom Displays Lid, 4

High f r e q u e n c y colour CRT range A range of colour CRTs, with high resolution phosphor screens with 0.26 rum dot pitch, is available from Norbain Technology. Manufactured b y Toshiba, the range includes 14 inch and 20 inch conventional tubes, and 15 inch and 17 inch full square tubes. All work on the IRS system and feature an in-line electron b e a m

gun, a neck of 29.1 mm and round aperture shadow mask.

Specially d e v e l o p e d for top-end high-resolution colour applications, the electron gun, deflection yoke and shadow mask technologies achieve a frequency capability to 64 kI-lz (and above in controlled conditions). This compares with 15.6 kHz for l o w - a n d

Board turns CRT into terntinal For less than £200, a CRT display can be converted to a computer terminal. Vako Displays' single Eurocard board, when used in conjunction with a CRT, offers an RS232,/video converter and qwerty k e y b o a r d or matrix keypad/RS232 converter. Priced at £195, it is 20% c h e a p e r and only half the size of its pre-

decessor, the cost and size reduction having b e e n achieved b y the use of a four-layer PCB which simplifies assembly and gives improved pecking density. The b o a r d is claimed to be the smallest of its type currently available. The terminal is then v'r52 compatible and can act as a receiveonly video display unit or as a duplex data terminal accepting data from either a parallel ASCII k e y b o a r d or a matrix keypad, with a minimum size of 4 rows by 4 columns. All communication between the host computer and the terminal takes place over an RS232 serial link. Various screen formats are available on request, the most common being 40 x 16, 64 x 16 and 80 x 25 (colunuw x rows). Vako Displays Ltd, W ~ Ind~ Estate, WrY, CYwyd r.r.13 9UN, ~ . One of the range of ku'gh resolution colour C7~Yk available from Norbain medium-resolution monitors. The electron g u n design enhances the r e q u i r e d focus and convergence performance, to operate with a dot pitch down to 0.26 ram, and a corner misconvergence capability as low as 0.4 ram. The low-loss deflection yoke complements the improved gun design for the higher frequencies of operation. Moderate contrast enhancement is achieved b y a lightly liuted face panel as standard. An optional antireflective bonded panel incorporates a quarter wavelength coating which greatly reduces reflection without the diffusing effect of a traditionally etched faceplate.
