The Bolmen Project: Rock Stress Measurements Using Hydraulic Fracturing and Overcoring Techniques. (In English) Bjarni Bjarnason, Bengt Leijon, and O r e Stephansson. Swedish Rock Engineering Research Foundation. 1986. 60 pp. SEK 200. The 80-kin Bolmen tunnel was constructed to convey fresh water from Lake Bolmen to the densely populated areas in southern Sweden. The work began in 1975 and the tunnel was put into permanent use in 1986. This report presents the results of rock stress measurements performed at two tunnel locations representing d i f f e r e n t geological conditions. Two d i f f e r e n t measuring methods, overcoring and hydraulic fracturing, were applied at each location. The report is available from the Swedish Rock Engineering Research Foundation, Storgatan 19, Box 5501, S-114 85 Stockholm, Sweden.
Clayton and J. Milititsky. Surrey University Press. 1986. 300 pp. £38.00. This book is divded into two parts: mechanisms and design. Under mechanisms, brief descriptions of soil behavior and wall placement conditions are given, followed by classical theories for earth pressures and graphical solution techniques. The design section describes various types of walls, and investigation methods for acquiring the necessary soil parameters for design, as well as tabulations of earth pressure coefficients obtained from various theories, and explanations on the use of these for design. The book deals with the design of reinforced earth as well as the more traditional types of retaining structures. The concluding chapter deals with slope stability and seepage analysis. The book can be ordered from Blackie Publishing Group, Wester Cleddens Road, Bishopbriggs, Glasgow G64 2NZ, U.K.
