This is a multi-author book with contributors from North America and Northern Europe which summarises the current practice of coronary artery surgery. It provides a very comprehensive account, including chapters on anatomy and physiology of the coronary circulation, the investigation and indications for coronary artery surgery, the associated non-cardiac problems of patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery and a very detailed account of one approach to the technical aspects of coronary artery bypass grafting. This chapter contains high quality colour photographs supplemented by line drawings which adds clarity to the text. There are chapters concerned with re-do coronary artery surgery, coronary artery anomalies and the mechanical complications of myocardial infarction. There is an excellent chapter which reviews the results of the prospective trials of surgical versus medical treatment for coronary artery disease. As with any multi-author work, some chapters fall below the general very high standard. In particular, decision-making related to patients with poor ventricular function and patients requiring re-do surgery are dealt with somewhat superficially. Nevertheless, these are minor details and do not detract from an overall excellent volume which will be a basic source of reference to all those concerned in the management of these patients. from a medical or surgical view-point and is likely to run into many editions.
